Fallout 1: too weak to complete all open quests, what else to do?

First time out of the vault
Hello everyone,

I'm stuck in Fallout 1 and I don't know how to progress in the game.

I've completed a few initial quests (Radscorpions, Gizmo, Missing Caravans, Hydrophonic Farms) and got the Water Chip by fixing the water pump. I've also killed the Skulz (not getting the mission done somehow) and grinded a bit with the ghouls in the sewers of Necropolis.
My open quests are to deal with the mutants at the watershed, find the lab (which means dealing with the Master I guess), join the Brotherhood and dispose of the merchant/deal with Decker. I'm also supposed to get rid of the Deathclaws to get weapons for the Blades against the Regulators. I'm also travelling with the caravans.

Now, it seems that I'm to weak to deal with any of these, and I get killed in one or two combat rounds by either Supermutants, Decker and his guards, the Master or Deathclaws. Even the Crimson Caravans missions are too much. Are there other missions I should look for, which would let me level up a bit, or there is something off with my character? It's true that I have just 4 Endurance and 5 Strength, but it seems weird to hit a wall so hard after being able to do OK so far. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

What perks do you have, what is your "build" ? Also is your small guns/melee/unarmed % decent ? END4 and STR5 on its own is not bad. If this is your first time with the classic fallout, SPECIAL and skills work different then in the newer ones. With the chance for spoilers, Per has put together a wonderful guide which goes in-depth into the mechanics and is available on this site.

I'm using a Plasma Pistol and Leather Armor.

Indeed this is the first time I'm playing the game. I'll take a look at the guide you mention.

Thanks for your help!

It would be very hard to hit anything with the Plasma Pistol while only having 52% Energy Weapons.

So, first - I suggest you switch to the Hunting Rifle for now (widely available and very accurate) until you get your Energy Weapons to a decent level.

And second - upgrade your armor ASAP. If you can't afford Combat Armor from Jake (Hub's Old Town) then go to Downtown Hub and talk to Irwin. Do his quest (Irwin's Farm) and you will get metal armor as loot and in the end he will reward you with the .223 Pistol, a very powerful weapon.

Your stats are fine, but you can't really go wrong with them, Fallout can be played in any way you wish.
