Fallout 1 - Water Caravan Issue

Cruciform

First time out of the vault
Heya everyone,

I have Fallout 1 installed with patches up to 1.3.3.

First of all, well before getting the water chip, I hired the Water Merchants from the Hub and increased the days left by 100 or so. After grabbing the water chip from Necropolis and running it back to Vault 13, the quest completed for me along with the Overseer giving me the next couple of quests.

Later on, I was messing around in the Hub and noticed that the Water Merchants still offered to take water to the Vault... So I went ahead and did that again (receiving 1k xp! woot)...only later on (and many saves later) did I realize the water chip quest was back on my Pipboy and not scratched out! WTF, I sez, maybe I can do the quest again. So I head back to Necropolis...no dice, I can't get another water chip. Then I go back and speak to the overseer and he says a few things about the water merchants and that's it.

Is there anyway to fix this problem? Also, if there isn't, will the game end when the 220 days is up?

Thanks!

You mod the game, you do not post in the unmodded games section.
It's really very fucking simple.

*shrug* It says "patch" on the download section of this very website, and the most mods I've seen (which I don't have installed!) are generally made to work with 1.3.3. If it means that much to you just move this topic to whatever section makes you feel warm and fuzzy.

you could use a savegame item editor to get a new waterchip

I actually tried this when I first had the problem...but the save game editors I downloaded just allowed you to change stats, not add items. (In fact, one of them on NMA was a broken link so I had to grab it from somewhere else and use it in another language lol) If you could point me in the direction of an editor that allows me to add items it would be much appreciated! (Maybe one of the advanced editors for FO2 works with FO1?)

Fallout 1 mapper - just place a new water chip in the vault 13 caverns and rewrite the file in your save games folder...

(but be sure to backup your save first!)

Fantastic! I'll try this as soon as I get home, thanks for your help everyone.

Holy crap...just adding in the water chip with the FO1 mapper? I figured it would be easy...

I'm pretty sure I just spent more time reseaching and downloading mod utilities just to fix this one problem than I actually did getting this far in the game!

Things I've learned:

1. 95% of Fallout tools are for FO2
2. No character editor for FO1 edits inventory
3. There's only one (as far as I could find) map editor for FO1
4. There's only one repack utility for FO1
5. (And this is the one that drove me fucking nuts) Just adding an item to a map doesn't work for saved games...unless you've not visited that map yet.

So...putting the waterchip down in Vault 13 doesn't work...luckily I had not been to Glow level 1, so I threw a waterchip down there and grabbed it when I loaded my save game. Finally!

I swapped out my modified master.dat with the original one and everything seems to be golden now. Fun times. You know, I don't think I've touched a game map editor since Doom 1.

Hopefully that helps anybody that has a similar FO1 problem.

This bug was fixed. Do you have any mods installed as well? If you don't, can you post exact dialogue sequence and e-mail me your savegame?

The only 'mod' I have is this:

Fallout v.1.3.3 patch by TeamX (unofficial)

The game itself was installed from the "Fallout 1 & 2" package.

And, as of right now, after taking the water chip back to the Overseer (again), I can still visit the water merchants and start the caravan.

Here is my savegame:

I'm standing right outside the water merchants. (Not that I ever plan on going near them again, heh)

I double-checked all scripts and there is no way you can even talk about water chip after solving a quest. Moreover, I tried to recreate situation myself in a new game with 1.2 and 1.3.3 patches installed. First I send water caravan to V13. Then I talked to Overseer and he took water chip. Quest was crossed in PIPboy. Then I walked to the water merchants again and there were only 2 possible dialogue options: "I want a job" and "Bye". No way to ask for caravan to the Vault.

My guess is you already had mstmerch.int file in your DATA\SCRIPTS folder before installing the patch and it wasn't replaced during archive decompression. Can you install a new copy of F1 from your CD and check your DATA folder?

PS Did you install any mods/patches before 1.3.3 or it was clean new installation?

Stupid question as well: have you installed patch v1.2 (semi-official) before patching game to v1.3.3?

This is to both Wasteland Ghost and Alchemist:

I just reinstalled earlier today, the installed version from disc is 1.1. I then applied 1.2 (semi) and 1.3.3. Crazily enough, the save games I have didn't work on it...wtf. I even used the same zips I had from where I did it the first time! I dunno...somehow the install must have got borked; I have not experimented with any other mods because this is my first time playing.

I dunno what to tell you...maybe I screwed up and put the patches in backwards last time or something? At any rate I've been playing with no problems after duping a water chip back into the game.

It's pretty awesome that there's such a hardcore community built around these games! I wish I had started playing them sooner, I think I've had them on my bookshelf for like 5 years.

Thanks for helping me out, hopefully I won't have any problems with the rest of the game (or FO2 for that matter).

Yes, like I said in my e-mail, I can't load your savegame with any combinations of 1.2 and 1.3.3 patches and/or NPC mod. It means, you've installed patch incorrectly. Now, after proper installation, you can't load your old saves as well.
