Fallout 2 Car Problems

First time out of the vault
I've installed the official 1.02 patch, then I installed the unofficial 1.04 patch from this site after I noticed it. I've also used a 3rd party save-game converter which I found through google, since when I tried to download the one hosted from this site I got a file-not-found error. In the readme of the one I downloaded it said something like "any sites distributing the product (like www.nma-fallout.com and www.interplay.com) are not liable for its support", so I would guess that I have downloaded the same one as on this site.
I've posted this at another forum which I frequent, but I couldn't get any help there so I'm posting here. Copy paste the conversation from the other forum so that I provide all the information possible. I'm burlywood-color the replies are in italics

I just got my car and was overjoyed. However it seems to dissapear when I go to a city, or maybe I'm missing something obvious. When I enter a city I enter the same way as if I've been walking on foot and there's no car to be seen anywhere. Same happens with random encounters. Any sugestions?

Does this happen in every city? Because I know in one city (Reno) there is a quest involving your car.
But I seem to recall that your car should be in the picture of all the situations where you enter a city. (Except first time entering Reno).
What happens if you travel? - do you travel at car speed or walking speed?

When I travel I travel at car-speed and I can see my fuel consumption. And it happens in every city. It even happens if I stop in the wilderness.
Interesting thing is that when I enter Reno the tour-guide there says something like "That's a car? Wow!" and when I go to NCR some guy there offers to take care of my car for 5 bucks even though there is no car in sight.

This seems wierd - I've never had that happen.
First time when entering Reno (slight spoiler) - sombody will "borrow" your car, and the quest starts by looking at the tracks on the "parking lot".
In NCR, the car should be located under the semi-roof where the guy is wanting the 5 bucks.
I would think that sounds like a bug, although I've never experienced that myself.
What if you drive/Travel to a different part of Reno, does the car follow you there?

After a bit of experimenting:
If I run out of fuel nine out of ten times the car will show up on the map as "car without fuel" and when I go to there I can see my car. After I put more fuel my car shows up in the next city I visit/place I stop. But after I leave from the city and stop somewhere else the car would dissapear again.
I know my car is supposed to get stolen in Reno, but before that happens I should see it on the carpark to the left... it only gets stolen after I leave the area and return. In my case I never see the car in the city I go to.
I've tried travelling almost everywhere but no luck... it's not a Reno thing, it's a car thing...
edit => More weirdness. When I ran outta fuel I got the following message in my message window (the thingie in the bottom left): "You are standing at the Great Bridge, passageway from your village to the vast wasteland". I know I wasn't anywhere near my village, so that kind of freaked me out. Probably doesn't hold any significance, but you never know. And also when I entered Reno from the north (not from virgin street) I couldn't get back in my car even though it was there (I had refuelled before). Whenever I clicked on it it said "you see: a car" though it was the hand cruiser that was showing.

I'm sorry for the long post, I hope someone takes the time to read it.
