Fallout 2 character rendering bug?

[x86]

First time out of the vault
After going down into Vault 15 and killing all the raiders inside, my character is displayed under objects .... like in the screenshot.

Anyone know how to fix this?

My specs
DELL Inspiron 1300 / Celeron/1GB RAM/Intel Integrated Video/Win XP Professional SP2 / Fallout 2 v1.2

Same problem with clean reinstall. If I start a new game it works fine, but the problem is with that save slot.

No, i don't run through objects, the moving field is the same. Only my character is rendered under objects and i can't use elevators .

You've been flagged as dead for some reason. People don't attack you either, right? I don't know if there's a fix for it, because I think it's an engine thing.

This may be the cause. I started with an older save and now it's ok.
Thanks for feedback guys...

Hi guys. I have the same bug, but it's not possible for me to simply load a previous game. Is there any other way to fix this? Perhaps by manually editing the savegame?

If you still have savegames where this is occuring, could you email me the save.dat and printout from the character screen? I don't expect to be able to fix it, but I might figure out something more about the savegame structure.</s>

Edit: Scratch that request. Playing with the control-R demo mode, I found the 'dead' bit. See here. Makes sense that it's in the same field as crippled limbs, as they can all be set by critical hits.

So does that mean it can be fixed using the doctors skill?
Edit: Not possible, forgot about the "can't raise the dead" part, but what about going to a doctor?

Being stored in the same field doesn't mean doctors can fix it. A hex editor should do the trick, though. Just search for 'FP', go 0x60 bytes past that, and set the next four bytes to 0.

He, I never actually thought the doctor thing would work, just thought it would be funny if it did.
Unfortunately I don't understand shit about hex editing. Somewhere close to the "FP" I found a place where if I put a value to it, the "you have died" screen pops up right away when I load a save, even if my character is not dead. But that's not what you were referring to, was it?

Hmm... it's hard to describe the process just in words. Go ahead and send me the original file; I'll see what I can do with it.

@ Kanhef,

Thanks for the offer, but I figured it out. How to explain it though, I don't know.
The field or square that handles your crippled status and the "you have died" screen is not the same as the one that turns you into a "ghost".

36 squares after "FP" the hex string value should be 20, but when you're a "ghost" that value is 38.

This could be handy if you want to get through the temple of trials fast or if you are stuck upstairs with one of the Bishop girls, just become a ghost for a little while, problem solved.

Nice, thanks for discovering that. It's like a permanent sneak mode - critters don't react if you get caught stealing from them. However, they do still turn hostile and will attack if you turn it off.

Edit - playing around with it a bit, the value 30, rather than 38, gives you stealth mode without drawing the character below scenery. Haven't tested any of the other bits yet.

Well done with the "30" find.
I tried playing a bit, and damn it's a powerful cheat.
Be careful who you tell, eh.
