Fallout 2 crashing in Xp

First time out of the vault
Hey thar fellers--
Heres the deal--I got my old laptop up and running, wiped Vista off of it (ugh...) and reinstalled XP. Its a Toshiba Satellite p205d-7802, and none of the drivers were set up for XP, but I got them all going anyway. I installed the unofficial FO2 patch trying to fix a problem Ive been having--the game crashes randomly and kills my laptop. Not crashes to the desktop, it kills the laptop entirely. I got the patch going, but the same thing happens. Im out of ideas...
Since its a new XP install, FO2 is the only thing I have on the laptop. No other programs, no viruses, etc. I tried running on Win95 compatibility, but I guess the new patch prevents it.

Any ideas?

Can you describe the crashes a bit more? Freezes, BSOD's?
Also what where you doing before a crash? Is it the same save that is crashing? The more info the better...

It crashes at different times in the game, usually during looting of some sort or another. No blue screens, no desktop, just totally dead. After it crashes I just have to reboot the laptop. I'm still missing my PCI device in device manager, but I can't remember what the pci device does. It's been a while... :/

To me that sounds more like you've got a pretty crappy version of Fallout 2.

Either that, or your laptop is crap and it overheats and turns itself off not to fry itself. More details, please... ;)

I've considered the overheating issue...it's possible. My copy of Fallout 2 is the one I've had for about 8 years. I'm really leaning towards an XP problem. I haven't had a chance to activate my copy of XP yet since I don't have my original serial (thanks Microsoft!). Not sure if this would cause a problem or not. I'm thinking I'll keep an us on the temperature of laptop while playing to rule out heat issues.
I'll get the specs on my laptop when I get home.

what does "just totally dead" mean? Black screen? Ctrl+Alt+Del won't do anything? Your computer shuts down/ cuts the power?

I have never experienced Fallout doing anything more serious than cause BSODs or freezing up. I would guess it's something with your computer.

Your missing PCI device could be a modem, graphic's card etc. Maybe you should try to fix that first and then also try to put some strain on your computer, like play some more demanding game and see if it will overheat.

Hi,
Same thing is happening to me whenever I reach Vault 13. The moment the map loads for Vault 13, the screen goes black & I have to CTRL+ALT+DEL my way out.

I noticed an error message though.

dwwin.exe-Application error
X The exception Breakpoint
A breakpoint has been reached.
(0x80000003) occurred in the application location 0x7c90120e.
Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on cancel to debug the program.

Clicking on either OK or Cancel hangs the computer.
I'm running Windows XP Media Center Edition, service pack 3.

Appreciate any help you can give as this is my all time fav game.
