Fallout 2 & D3dWindower

FalloutGirl

First time out of the vault
I've Been playing Fallout 2 (from gog.com) and using the d3dwindower to play it on my computer. I recently decided to add the Restoration Project to it. Now whenever I try to load it with D3DWindower it fails to start giving me an error that reads

"Instruction at "00490987". Referenced memory at "00000070". The memory could not be read. Click on OK to terminate the program."

The first number in the message is always different but the 00000070 is always there. I know I can play it in a window with the SFall but when I do it sticks it in the upper left corner and doesn't seem to allow me to move it at all. I also like to use D3DWindower because I only have to have one icon on desktop for all three Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics (plus a small selection of other older games).

It will work if I run it normally though without the D3DWindower so the files are not corrupt I'm pretty sure. It also worked in D3DWindower prior to adding the Restoration Project.

The computer I'm running it on if it matters is a
3.0 quad core processor
Nvidia GeForce GTX 465
4gb RAM
Windows 7 64bit OS

I thought maybe I had just overkilled the game but realized "oh wait no I've been playing it" So was hoping someone would know what the problem is I think I've tried to adjust just about every setting in the ddraw.ini to see if that helps but it hasn't :(

PS: I have the Restoration Project 2.1.1 w/ Sfall 2.10b

Hello. No need to use the D3DWindower, when you have installed the Restoration Project with sfall.

Open the "ddraw.ini" file in your Fallout2 directory (use notepad or some text editor) and set Mode=5 in the [Graphics] section. That's DirectX 9.0c windowed mode, you can also set the proper window resolution in "ddraw.ini" file.

Try removing fallout2 from D3dwindower and add it again with the RP mod installed. Maybe uses a different exe file that needs to be "processed" by the program again.

As for sfall windowed mode, you _can_ move the window. You can set a hotkey for it in the ddraw.ini. Probably you'll have to move the window every time you run fallout2, though.

Thank you for the replies I knew I could use the sfall to get a window but I missed that option (the one for moving the windowed mode) in the ini. I do like using D3DWindower though because it's less desktop clutter though :P

It's weird though I got it to work now. At first Fallout would not work if I ran D3DWindwer normally I had to Run as Administrator. After adding fallout 2 to it seems to only work when I do NOT run it as administrator o.O both crash now when Run as Administrator >_>.

Doesn't matter much now that I know I can get it to work but anyone know why that might be doing that? Fallout and Fallout 2 are the only ones I've had the issues with I also have Planescape Torment, Alpha Centauri, Septerra Core and Soulbringer running with D3DWindower

yes I put it into a custom directory "D:\Computer Games\Fallout Series\(Fallout & Fallout 2 respectively)"

I don't know what difference that makes though if any? Is there one?

Well you need to do it for vista/W7 because there are bugs they cause for some reason when you have the RP installed, like not being able to save games. You know I remember having the same problem but I can't for the life of me remember what caused it, I'll try and see if I can figure it out.

Oh and do you have the latest directx 9 you'll need it if you want to play with sfalls' dx mode turn on. And also if you're playing it with dx mode turn on you can't pin it to the task bar for some reason, though you can create a desktop short cut if you want.

thats all i can think of atm, unfortunatly.
