Fallout 2 Dialogue Crashes/Freezes

Hello,

Sorry if something like this has happened, I googled and searched the forums for a while, but nothing like this has come up.

I am working my way through Fallout 2 with:
Kill Apps Patch
Fallout Restoration 2.1.2b
Fallout 2 High Resolution Patch 3.06

The first issue is when I reached Vault City, I spoke with Lynette, she mentioned the reactor, and when I walked away, came back, she asked if I dealt with it, and my whole system froze. I had to hard reboot, and when I launched the game, the save file was corrupt.

So, I deleted everything, re-installed it and everything was fine. I ran into that Lynette bug again, but the save was fine. As long as I ignored Lynette, no problems.

Fast forward to my second issue. I just entered broken hills, and began to talk to Marcus. The first time I did this, his dialogue completely froze the system like the Lynette bug. The second time I got a few dialogue options in, then the system froze. Subsequent tries did the same things.

I deleted, reinstalled everything again. then an odd thing happened. I got a Fallout error when launching. Could not be read - reference at something or other. So, I ran as administrator, then it worked fine. I had to copy my saves from AppData, move them to the SAVEGAME in the BlackIsle Folder, but it worked.

I disabled UAC, even added an exception for Data Execution Prevention.

Even after all this, both issues are affecting my game, and I am not sure the cause of it.

Are they corrupt video/dialogue options? Would these be original game files that are accessed, modded, both perhaps?

I thought maybe it was an issue with video dialogue npcs like Tandi, Hakunin etc, but they dont freeze my system. I tested many times. So far, just Marcus and Lynette freeze my system.

The worst part is I can't run task manager to kill the process, everything just freezes completely. Hard reboot every time.

Currently, I have 5 party members Sulik, Lenny, K-9, Vic and Cassidy.

Why did you install the Restoration Project over the Unofficial Patch, even though it says clearly that the latter is already included in the former?

Try reinstalling again, but install the Restoration project directly on your clear Fallout 2 installation and then top it with the newest Hi-Res patch, if you really want to.

Also, it would have been more than enough if you gave this:

So the RP really shouldn't let you install over my unofficial patch. Hmm, or maybe it's only the other way around... It should be safe to do that, though I recommend not to. Are you manually installing these things?

I suggest installing ONLY the Restoration Project and nothing more. Sure you won't get the latest high resolution patch files, but you really don't need them (since the Restoration Project already comes with a version) and I've taken the time to make sure everything works together.

Just make sure when you reinstall no old files are left over.

Well, I did a clean install, reg wipe - the works. I used the install disc, re-downloaded the RP installer version, then used the high res update again. (I know you mentioned not to, but I tried without first and it was working, thought I would troubleshoot.)

The two files worked. It must have been the combination of those three that was doing it.

Marcus talks now without my system freezing. I will try Lynette later.

It seems like a lot of people can't be bothered reading the "README" files. They would save themselves a lot of hassle if they followed instructions. :roll:

Well, as I mentioned at the top of my very first post I did look at the Read Me. As well as Google. I look for issues similar to mine. Most of the FAQ is from a modder creator perspective - not appreciative first time users.

If there is forum community concern about what to include when reporting problems and what to read, someone may want to do what most forums do:

1) Compile a list of common first time/novice user troubleshooting and FAQ steps

2) Create a knowledge base for common errors and solutions

3) Create a preferred format for submitting info

Create from the perspective that someone has never modded anything ever. Consider creating a support forum specifically for troubleshooting and support.

Lastly, Please try and be a little considerate for first time posters. Your comment came across as very elitist, I hope that was not your intent.
