First time out of the vault
Hello, ive just installed fallout 2 again and when i click on the icon to play on it it comes up with an error "not enough free hard disk space. fallout requires at least 20.0 megabytes of free hard disk space."
Ive got enough space on my hard disk so im not sure what the problem is, im assuming i need a patch or something.

cheers.

Which operating system?

I've never encountered this problem, but you should download the patch anyway. It's around this site somewhere.

Also if you're running XP, it's best to run under windows 98 emulation (arguably, it works best for me). It's possible that since I always have run it under emulation that I never ran into it.

Good luck.

Yea im running it on windows xp pro. How do yo get this windows 98 emulation thing then?

I would also suggest the stickied post (which also asks for your specs as well...ahem), which has the manual installation method for Fallout 1 & 2. I've noticed that it, plus the environment being set to run in the right emulation mode, will solve most of the problems.

Check out the rest of the crashing/map too fast/etc. threads on this forum, most of them recent and give good help for what you might need to do. I've really only seen this kind of problem occur on Windows XP (most likely the NTFS), but if your operating system isn't XP, disregard this and please give us a bit more technical background of your problem.

You might need to tweak your virtual memory settings, or set them so that windows auto sets your virtual memory.

I had exactly the same problem myself.

You just have to add the line free_space=0 into the file like this

[sound]
music_path1=C:\Program Files\Interplay\Fallout\data\sound\music\
music_path2=D:\data\sound\music\

[system]
critter_dat=C:\Program Files\Interplay\Fallout\critter.dat
critter_patches=C:\Program Files\Interplay\Fallout\data
master_dat=C:\Program Files\Interplay\Fallout\master.dat
master_patches=C:\Program Files\Interplay\Fallout\data
art_cache_size=261
free_space=0

Good luck!

EDIT: Actually, just opening the master.dat file in wordpad and closing it again fixes things for some reason.
