Fallout 2 freezes after a few minutes

First time out of the vault
I've installed fallout 2, and can play it for a few minutes (15-20 if I'm lucky) but then it randomly freezes, completely locks up my computer.
It responds to nothing, alt+tab, CTRL ALT DEL etc
I am forced to restart every time.

I've tried installing the unoffical patch, but alas no effect.

I am running windows 7 by the way.
 
Could you be more specific, as far as your hardware is concerned? Is it laptop or desktop? Is it x64 system? Older Fallouts are unlikely to run on x64 based OS.

Maybe there is something about your system configuration ;).

Anyway, try this one: terminate 'explorer.exe', run the app and don't forget about running it as an admin.

The Explorer on newer systems likes to block the old stuff :).

I run win 7 32 desktop and i terminate explorer.exe using cmd to fix the colors.

It still freezes if i play with fucked up colors (without terminating explorer)

AMD athlon 62 x2 Dual core processor 4800+ 2.50 GHz
3,00 GB RAM
Nvidia Geforce 8600 GS

oh and i run it widescreen
 
I have experienced this kind of issue several times before. The thing is, the freeze didn't occur after 20 seconds of playing, as in your case, but one, maybe two times per 5 hours of playing.

problem solved :clap:
installed the high res patch and the unoffical patch and turned the resolution to widescreen and the colors to 16 bit

works almost perfectly now, though everything is tiny.
also it fixed the strange colors, so i don't have to close down explorer
