Fallout 2 gives my computer a workout...

Laputan Machine

First time out of the vault
Okay, I've installed the latest unofficial patch, as well as the high-texture patch, and everything is running smoothly. The only problem is that I can hear my computer revving up like crazy when I run the game. By that I mean I can hear the fans working like crazy because the computer's getting hot. (Running on Windows 7 by the way).

Which is weird, because I'm able to run modern games on very high settings, and even they don't usually cause such an effect. Another thing that is weird is that the Fallout process doesn't even seem to use that much power in the task manager.

I've tried different settings but nothing I try seems to help the problem. Any tips, anything?

Have you ran it with compatibility settings? Windows 7 gave me issues with Fallout until I did that.

Unfortunately, trying to run it in any type of compatibility mode either gives me an error message, or simply leads to the game not launching at all...

The high texture and unofficial patch may be causing problems. I'm not sure since I never used them. Anyone else?

Do you mean the high resolution patch? This should be in the modding forum. It is normal that the video card fan(s) will speed up, the patched game uses DirectX. It probably shouldn't be more noticable than with other games, though.
Please post what exactly it was you installed and in what order. Do you have the latest drivers for your video card and DirectX 9 installed? Keep in mind that DirectX 9 and DirectX 11 can coexist so the latter does not include the former.

Yes, I do indeed mean the high resolution patch, and I apologize if I posted this in the wrong section of the forum. The mods/patches I have installed are Killap's unofficial patch (ver. 1.02.27.3) and Mash's High Resolution patch (v.3.0.6), in that order. I also have the latest drivers, as well as DirectX 9 and 11 installed.

I'm starting to suspect maybe there's not a whole lot to do at this point, except maybe uninstall the resolution patch and hope that calms things down.

Thanks for the tip. I actually did uninstall the high resolution patch and that seemed to cool the computer down a significant amount. So I think I'm going to settle for the lower resolution as that seems to make things more quiet.

Anyway, thanks for the help guys. :)

The Fallout's like a few old games aren't very multitasking friendly and don't relinquish the cpu for things like idle mode, which is probably what's causing your excessive fan noise.
There is an option in sfall(which comes with the unofficial patch) that should help though. Find the ddraw.ini, open it in notepad and edit the line ProcessorIdle=-1 to equal 1.
