Fallout 2 Master Dat doesnt install correctly.

First time out of the vault
Hi guys, I'm having a little problem with a humongous installation of Fallout 2, the CD is version 1.0 I believe, it's a rather old one (and a bit scuffy as well).

Anyway, when I do a Humongous install, it installs seemingly fine, I don't get any errors during the installation itself. But when I tried playing it I got the "cant find/load text fonts" error that is frequently talked about.

Well I've had the problem before and fixed it just by manually copying the master.dat file to the hard drive, as the installer seems to fail to install 10 whole megabytes of the master dat correctly. The one it installs is 307 MB, but the actual file(the one on the CD) is 317 MB.

But nowadays, when I try to manually copy it, it fails towards the end (i'm guessing its when it gets to that problem 10 megabytes) and I get the cyclic redundancy check error. As my comp has two drives (ones a DVD-RW and the others a plain CD ROM drive) I tried switching it to the CD ROM drive, but only to get another error, Invalid MS-DOS function or something like that.

I tried editing the CFG files to look for the master dat on the CD instead, and the game does initially run, but with serious pauses and error messages outputted instead of dialogue rather frequently, also, the game is given to suddenly pausing and then coming back after a bout of CD sputtering and some serious distortion of the graphics, at which point i have to quit and reload the game.

All in all, this is getting rather annoying, and since I know the problem is with the CD itself, I have no idea what to do about it besides buying a new CD. is there a replacement master dat i could dl somewhere, or do I just have to get a new CD? Any suggestions?

You'll have to get a new CD, or a more reliable reader in which to put it (and then move it to your own comp using an USB or something if necessary). File sharing requests are not allowed here.

hmm. maybe ill try copying to a flash drive or something. I have one. Cleaning the CD didnt help, though it usually does, do you think the cd is just too damaged?

EDIT- The flash drive thing dont work either :'(. If anybody has a suggestion that wont involve buying a new cd please share. I've tried an overwhelming number of tricks already.

You can get a CD repair kit ($20-35 for a motorized device, $5-10 if you do it by hand). Some work better than others, so check reviews.

There are also some alternative methods you could try. If one of them works, I'd suggest making a backup copy as well, since I don't know how good they are as permanent solutions.
