Fallout 2 noob, which mods and how?

First time out of the vault
So yesterday I received a (CD) copy of Fallout 2 which I am running on Linux via Wine. I have to say I have really fallen in love with the game. I wasn't really able to get far into the game until I fucked up my install trying to use some mods. So my question is which mods should I be using, can they stack on top of each other, and how to install them? I am new to this whole thing so your patience is appreciated. Thanks.... ABF.

Almost no mods are compatible with each other, not because modders are short-sighted but because the game is old and the architecture has many restrictions. Your best bet is just to start with killap's FO2 Restoration Project. It's easy to install, quality is high, and my understanding is it works with WINE versions pretty well. Our community's other most significant mod is MIB88's Megamod, which has loads of great new stuff, but you need to have a bit of technical savvy to customize that to your needs.

Would you recommend adding FO2 Restoration Project on one's first playthrough ? Is it like an extended edition of the original game using cut content only or does it also add new stuff , making it better to stick to the vanilla version first for the original game experience ?

I'd go for the Restoration Project, since it does have the cut content left out originally and a lot of bug fixes, too. I haven't played vanilla in many years ever since it came out because of all of that.

If you want the weapons in the game to be more balanced and fun, you can try out my mod! Link in my sig.
