Look, Ma! Two Heads!

Normally I just use the custom to command my npcs in combat. However some of the settings confuse me and I need some explaining as to what exactly they do.
For example, telling someone to attack "the weakest" or "the strongest". Or to "Snipe the enemy". I have little experience using that one.
Weapon preferences are easy as are run away, burst fire, and distance. I have never experimented with burst fire because I read that it is not recommended to give your allies weapons with burst fire modes. I also don't bother with run away and chem use.
In the beginning when I have just Sulik after recruiting him, I tell him to stay close to me and attack whoever is attacking me. Later, after I have several other comrades, I tell them all to stay close to me, later switching to on your own. I have Sulik and Marcus attack the strongest, Vic and Cassidy attack the weakest. I followed advice from someone's faq on gamefaqs.
What I would like to know is what settings should I use at certain points of the game for my npcs in order to maximize the combat effectiveness?
