Fallout 2 on ubuntu/debian linux via wine/MASSIVE cpu load

First time out of the vault
This is a halfway-there howto of playing fallout 2 on wine.

First of all, install wine. Add the repository found from wine's homepage to your sources.list and download the key for it. There are instructions to this on the site. Then follow the instructions to install wine.

Now you must open up wine configuration from menu, it's under wine -> wine config, or you can type winecfg into console. Set it to emulate windows 98. I like to play fallout in windowed mode, so you might consider adding a virtual desktop size for wine from graphics-tab. Mine is 640x480 since that's fallout's native resolution.

After that, insert your fallout disc and open up your default file browser. Browse to the cd, and right-click on the setup.exe application. Choose to open with wine. If wine isn't on the list, then choose to open with another application, and type wine in the field. Install to the default directory, since wine creates a "C-drive" to your home folder under hidden /.wine -directory.
Do these tricks to the patch installer also, and then you may have a menu item to point to wine -> blackisle -> fallout2 -> fallout2.exe which opens up the game easily. If not, browse to /home/username/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/BlackIsle/Fallout 2/ and right-click on the executable and choose to open with wine.

Now i've had only one problem with this. This eats up all my cpu. It's running on 99% all the time I play. I'm not sure if the problem is in fallout, or with wine, but if anyone has any advice to correct this, please tell me :)

bump :P

Is there any more information of this? I'd really enjoy playing fallout2, but as it causes MASSIVE cpu load and my laptop fans start screaming, it's rather annoying to play it, which I usually do at school :)

It's Fallout's fault. I can think of two solutions, play it on an old computer without a CPU fan, or use a program that limits CPU usage per software. I dunno if there are any available for Linux systems though.

I didn't have that problem playing it using wine on my desktop PC. It runs pretty smoothly.
I don't know if it makes a difference, but did you apply the official patch?

Yeah I did, and then the unofficial one, but they don't make a difference. The game runs smoothly on my pc too, but consumes huge amount of cpu, that's all. Did you run it in an emulated desktop or fullscreen?

I ran it in a window without virtual desktop. I never checked the cpu load, though.
I also realized that, while the game runs quite fine, the restoration mod does not. I experienced many bugs besides the engine tweaks not working (Scroll wheel etc.). This may also be a problem with linux using case-sensitive filenames.

My scrolling works, I think it's a feature only in sfall modified .dll -file or so. I'm eagerly waiting for FIFE and Zero Projekt to get finished, they must run so much better :)
