just started playing. any suggestions for a new player in fallout 2? I only have like a knife and a one shot rifle. wouldn't mind suggestions on finding better weapons, ammo and cash

there is a poorly hidden 10mm pistol (and a VERY well hidden combat knife) in the caves under klamath, both on the third level

What Makenshi has told you is a good advice, depending on your character. You can find various weapons, either in the aforementioned area, or you can steal some (if your steal skill is high) - alternatively, you can just loot/steal most of the stuff and then barter them for some weapons.
Also Sulik. Make his recruiting a 1# priority, as he is very useful throughout the game, and is fairly cheap. Not to mention that he is carrying a leather jacket which he can give you for free.
Alternatively, if you're playing Restoration Project, you can press Shift to highlight all the items lying on the floor etc. (there are few other mods which do the same thing).
However, if you're playing a 'naked' first playthrough, you will have to look carefully (I recommend playing like this for the first time, with maybe some bug-squashing mods).

It's annoying and time consuming, but it's possible to get the missing trapper quest in Klamath, go straight to toxic caves, avoid the golden geckos, rescue smiley (steal his 10 golden gecko pelts for some early wealth), avoid the geckos again and take the man to klamath; as prize, you learn to skin geckos and recruit slik for free.
I spend a month or two back in arroyo, hunting geckos for pelts and collecting plants (xander root and broc flower) for mere fun; I just like collecting them and "planting" elsewhere. I also colect rocks (Per's fault).

Honestly, I usually go wandering the wastes until I find a caravan being ambushed by bandits or something. Then I just let them kill each other, finish off any stragglers and take their stuff.

There's no need for a supreme weaponry in Klamath. Chosen One can handle everything with a bare hands. Smash the sneaky geckos with your mighty fist!

I've never collected rocks. Actually, I did in Klamath, but I'd always drop them before venturing to Den.

You can always rush to the Power Armor early in the game, but be careful not to wander aimlessly into the wastes. You will most likely die a horrible death at the hands of Super-Mutants,Centaur's, and Evil Robots if you try to wander too carelessly.
