Fallout 2 version 1.01?

First time out of the vault
First actual thread! Rapture!

Pardon me if this has been asked already, the search didn't turn up any results so here goes: I bought the EU version of Fallout 2 (a mint copy for 4e, yay!), and gleefully satisfied my FO-addiction of yesteryear for several days, until I decided to search for some info online. Apparently, the 1.0 of the game is rather bugged, and upgrading to 1.02 is paramount. However, in the lower-right (or was it lower-left) corner of the main menu, it says "version 1.01". As I prefer not to upgrade, I'm wondering how much of the "critical" bugs have been fixed in this version? I have not been able to find a version history (the supplied readme is for 1.0) anywhere.
Cheers,

Anton

I believe that that's because you have the UK version, it's called 1.01

However, regarding Fallout 2's patches, you'll want to patch it. First off, you'll want the children's patch to put the children back in the game, you'll get several really weird things and a few incompletable quests otherwise.
Secondly, you'll want to install 1.02. There's no reason not to, because without it the game is really, really bugged, especially the car. Lastly, you'll probably want to try installing Killap's patch as well, since that too squashes a lot of bugs that were left in the game.

Really, Fallout 2 is incredibly buggy and there are a lot of problems that aren't even fixed with the official patch.

Thanks, that makes sense. About the patch though, I'd like to keep my savegames, but I've heard conflicting reports about the savegame converter - first I read it only supports the US version, but I found a link later mentioning it "also supports German version". I'd rather not start anew, if possible.

Well, I'm not entirely certain, but there shouldn't really be any difference between US and UK savegames. The only way to find out is to backup your savegames and try.

I *think* the converted supports conversions between 1.01 and 1.02. I think. Well, I remember it has a radio button for 1.01 As Sander said, backup, try, report.

Krap... it doesn't work! There's only one savegame converter, right? (asking this because I dont see any 'radio button' in the one I have)

However, there is hope. The converter reports the savegames being from 1.01, and when I try to convert them, it produces an error about the version not being supported. Well, my guess is that it simply retrieves the version number from the savegame file. Now, if what Sander says is correct and the 1.01 denomination applies merely to a regional localization, as opposed to technical changes, the actual savegame data shouldn't be different from 1.00 - I'll do some experimenting with a disassembler and hex editor tonight to see if I can fool this converter into working anyway :-)

Erm... if the only difference is the version number, and the makers of the converter knew how to read that, why would they use it to say, "You have 1.01 so this program will arbitrarily refuse to convert it even though it understands every bit of data in it perfectly, neener"?

Probably because it doesn't "know" anything about version and just does a simple check on numerical value to see if it's in the list of supported versions. Haven't had time to look at it thus far though.

But why would there be such a list? Assuming that 1.0 and 1.01 are the same with regard to saved data, what sounds more likely:

1) The creators of the converter either check both versions and see they're the same, or they test the converter written with one in mind and find that it works for the other, or they never even think about it, ending up with a program which can handle both because they're the same anyway, or

2) They assume, without any investigation or testing, that it only works on one version, and then actively prevent the program from working on the other, even though it would have worked?

This doesn't matter much, it just seemed like such a strange assumption. If it turns out to be true, I will laugh.
