First of all, let me say I'm very excited to hear that Black Isle is considering to continue the Fallout line.
I believe I was one of the first people to play Fallout and I know I was one of the first people to play Fallout 2. I've played both several times and consider myself a veteran player. With that said . . .
The Fallout series is a spectacular RPG. Let us consider why. Some might say because of the polical statements and social implications, some might say because of the role-play and watching your character advance philosophically and in ability, some for the humor, and others for the sheer fun of watching some guy pop like a zit when you blast him with your minigun at point blank range!!!
The point is, the heart and soul of the game does not revolve aroung the combat system. I find it hard to believe that making the game real-time or pseudo-real-time would change the game so drastically as to make it a bad experience.
At first I was opposed to a real-time change in combat, but the more I thought about it, the more thought it didn't really matter. I have always known Interplay and Black Isle to make quality products, and I'm sure whatever they decide to do, Fallout 3 will be just as gripping and touching a story line as the first two.

P.S.: I highly enjoyed the Monty Python refernces!

Something in the line of how Planescape:Torment did their combat would be good. However you're discussing this in the wrong forum, so I'd take it to the Fo3 forum if I were you.

I hate them. I already dislike Monty Python's dim-witted humor, and the fact that Fo2 was just STREWN with annoying *cliché* Monty Python jokes really detracted from the game. I mean really, maybe one or two *SUBTLE* Monty Python jokes, but not the whole shitload BIS put into Fo2.

xotor, you must not be human because you can not laugh at monty python. i think the fact that it is so dimwitted makes it funny. and its hella better than jim carey, or drew carey, or galahger.

You people don't understand. Monty Python is *not* dimwitted, it's highly sophisticated humour. It's not stuff like Jim Carey mentioned above, that any moron can laugh at.
It's a bit like Beavis & Butthead... man they kick ass...

I can't stand Monty Python because it goes beyond just dim-witted to just plain stupid, like they're just begging to get a laugh from stupid silly acts. It reminds me of humor shows kids put on when they're young, it's funny to them, but nobody else really understands the humor.

How do you explain random stupid jokes like the guards making faces at Arthur, or the dumb she's a witch schmeel?

The most horrific example of stupid British is Mr. Bean. That show is SOOO stupid, I never really found myself laughing at anything in it. He's some stooge who tries to make a joke by repeating the same gag over and over again. How inane can you get?

>It's a bit like Beavis &
>Butthead... man they kick ass...

While I do find Beavis and Butthead pretty funny, it is only because they are so incredibly stupid.

I remember watching Monty Python when I was 8 yrs old. Even though I can’t remember almost everything from it I know that it was really funny for me then. It probably wouldn’t be now. The best comedy that I saw on British television in my opinion was Benny Hill. That guy was a genius.

No... nooo.... you DO NOT understand MP, that's why it seems so childish. It's very sophisticated. And Beavis & Butthead are funny not because they just are stupid, but because they have a cool attitude towards things.

"uhhhuhu.. uuuhh..check it out Beavis"
"mhhmhhehe, cool, cool! She's naked!"

"Beavis, you're never gonna score!"
"uhh...that sucks!... yeh.. hmhehmhmm"

Come on

You thought the "She's a witch" exchange was dumb? I thought it was great! While the idea itself isn't that funny, bits like "What else floats in water? Uhh, very small rocks?" crack me up. To me, that's Monty Python at their best.

it might just be my generation, or the way i grew up or the people i hang out with but Monty Python is a joke in itself to me. I've never tried to watch it and i probably never will. Now southpark...THATS COMEDY

Southpark is very, very primitive and bad humour.
People laugh, cause the kids are more vulgar and rude than in ordinary cartoons
"hehehe... he said a bad word!". Or those kids that fart or take dumps all the time... something like that... can't remember cause I never watch it.
Monty Python (and B&B) are satire, which some people may not be capable of understanding and therefore must resort to childish and simple humour, such as Southpark.

Come on yourself..

Take a look at that joke and tell me that isn't stupid? I mean really, "uh small rocks" is considered funny? Is looking at stupid people talk supposed to be funny?

Want to know why the Simpsons is so popular across many audiences? Because many of the jokes aren't obvious the way Monty Python plays the jokes. There are tons of allusions, plays on words, and other crafty jokes. It takes a bit of intelligence to get some of the jokes.

In Monty Python you need no such previous knowledge of places or allusions. All of it is "obvious humor," the kind that caters to those that know nothing to begin with. The only thing that remotely was an allusion was the Trojan Horse part of the movie, and they ruined that joke by launching the thing over the wall.

What is really sickening are the jokes like the Carrier-Pidgeon Coconut joke. Talk about beating a dead horse. "Oh how would a carrier-pidgeon carry a coconut? Maybe two pidgeons or so, but not one..." lame humor. Then they use those stupid high voices, geez, I really expected more from British humor.

Childish = Sophisticated? How? The way I see it, British humor tries to be entirely Tongue-in-Cheek humor. A lot of shows like that in the USA don't do well because it is so incredibly stupid.

Why do shows like Sienfield and Frasier do well? Because they are comedies of circumstance and well-crafted storylines. Many of the jokes are subtle, like the fact that Kramer slides into Jerry's house.

In Frasier, many of the jokes require knowledge of "higher-class" objects and ritual.

This may also come from the fact that the characters stay *in* character. They have personalities which combine to create odd effects.

I don't see that in Monty Python. I see a stupid show that throws a jumble of "this should be funny" gags into a movie and sells it. How about all the little sub-parts in the Holy Grail where there's a pounding sound and some animated person walks out and sees the sun jumping on the earth? Or maybe the narrator that get's his neck sliced? Or how about the anachronisms like the police van during the battle? They're just thrown in with no thought to it all. Annoying.

you got to understand the beauty of monty python first of all. i mean, think about all the struggles theyve been through. first of all, they have to live in england. man that would suck. then you find out later that graham chapman (the guy who played king aurther you stupid gits!) was a homo. the monty python references were great as were the many mad max referances

i agree with that too sweaty. when you look at the history of the comedy cartoons you can see excactly where southpark is coming from. the flinstones, jetsons, and scooby doo were all good except one thing, they are way too old and they get reptitive. The simpsons were shall we say it cartoon comedy at its best. is there anyone in this forum that doesnt like the simpsons? the reason for this is because the simpsons brought ideas to life that were to crazy to think about. and then with south park its just a step further only with south park they have no regards to who is watching the show. they DIRECT their show at children. i mean really if you were a parent would you let your kids watch a preist banging a woman in the confession room? or satan and saddamn hussain being gay lovers. If you ever sit and think about what your watching. i mean sure south park is funny... but its fucking sick.

you're american, aren't you? :P
As I said, MP is satire, but one which requires an even higher level of understanding than Seinfeld etc.
Simpsons is also very good satire, and you don't get all the jokes unless you're familiar with some of the events happening in the world. It's not for just any dork who wants to laugh. Monty Python is, in a way, similar.

I'd like to see some, if *any*, proof of that. Monty Python humor is *stupid* humor, no sophistication, appealing to a very LOW denominator; the kind of humor where you say to yourself, "they're begging the audience for a laugh."

Got something to say to the contrary? Show me how, in *any way* Monty Python shows any sort of sophistication in humor.

well I can't show you any proof, you'll just have to go watch some. I recommend Life of Brian. The who thing is a satire, making fun of such things as christianity and the birth of christ.

maybe we should start a new topic to discuss this Monty Python etc thing. It really has nothing to do with this one.
