Fallout 3 - The Difference

First time out of the vault
Ok, let me start by saying I could be completely wrong and could be worrying over nothing.
But the thing that I'm afraid of is that there will be more mindless "monsters" in the game. In FO1&2 there were dumb animals and of course they would attack you for just being near, but ghouls mutants etc. always had some dialogue harassing you and you would at least have a clue why they were attacking you. It was pretty much never the case that all of a sudden you were being attacked and had no clue why (cough oblivion).

/Rant off

The closest we have seen to random unprovoked attacks are "Feral Ghouls". I haven't played Oblivion yet, so I can't really comment on that.

I'm thinking there will be ghouls and other mutants we could actually approach. Oblivion had this sort of this "Total War" feel to it, in which the Daedra or bandits would attack you on sight and it seemed appropriate to the game. Fallout 3 probably (and hopefully) won't go this route. If the developers are true fans, they'll respect the games ability to avoid combat.

They are true fans. Of money. And 13 year old boys have their parents money. And therefore Bethesda loves 13 year old boys. And 13 year old boys don't care WHY they get attacked as long as they get to shoot shit with big guns and big exploshunz and lots of PHEW PHEW DAKKA DAKKA BOOM!

Amen brother. You hit the nail on the head there.
Holy shit you must have a PHD in marketing.
You should be a marketing consultant. Apply to
Beth's marketing division and paste this into your
application. They'll love you.

Oblivion as far as getting attacked is similar to morrowind.

Daedra and the princes are generally assholes who command many humanoid beasts who have the intelligence of a walnut.

The unfortunate thing is that bethesda seems to be playing fallout the same way when the original fallouts didn't. Insted of yapping angery messages of DONT FUCKING TOUCH MY STUFF! its Raaawwrrrgarrgle dumb radioactive zombie shooting deathrays at you. Which admittedly is 50's thought. However fallout is about the ideal of the 50's being contrasted with the reality that just because something looks evil or good. Doesn't mean it actually is.

O.o
Other than the random encounters, the Base Full o' Angry Mutants (tm) etc?
What's your worry? That they won't include the characteristic combat taunts in FO3, that you won't have both hostile and non-aggressive mutants/ghouls or what? Yes, the neutral or allied NPCs tended to give you "don't touch that" or "leave or die" warnings, but the aggressive ones just attacked on sight.

What tends to irk me is when an RPG is "You and good guys vs bad guys" in the combat approach. Fallout on the other hand has slaver caravans vs raiders, gangs vs mobsters, and so on. Where FO3 could really shine is if you will get to do stuff like luring mutants into a building full of feral ghouls or raiders and letting them slug it out while you sneak off and snipe the survivors. You could pull that trick in some towns in FO2 but not in the Wastes.

You must've not played the same game as I did because I constantly came across random encounters in the wastes where I could let two parties slug it out, kill the survivors and take their loot.

We already know that at least some ghouls can be talked to like normal NPCs.

We don't know whether there are non-hostile super mutants (although I think Pete implied at it in one of the video interviews). However, they are not mindless beasts (maybe aside from the Behemoth) and according to the previews they at least talk to each other.

i try to look at the future. If the sucky random encounters and lack-of-dialogue becomes a reality then at least we will be able to make a mod for it using the construction set. It will be the equivalent of the 'Obsuro's Oblivion Overhaul' mod, but for fallout 3.
for those that don't know, or havn't played oblivion, it was basically a mod that turned Oblivion in something it SHOULD have been developed into. It really gave the game life, where all that stood in it's place before was a dumb, overly hostile, easy game.

In fallout 2 terms, it would be like making a much more advanced version of the RP and MegaMod, all in one. Though it didn't add in extreme over-the-top crap. It added advanced stuff like making a use for gems other than for selling by using them in spells or alchemy. To cut a long story short, making oblivion into an actually really good game.

That's what we can look forward to making happen, if indeed fallout 3 turns out to be a dumb clone of oblivion

I think that's an honest worry. In Fallout 1 & 2 the random encounters always felt real. Like you just happened upon some raiders with their pants down. Or some slavers at the job rounding up some tribals. My worry is that Beth's randoms will just stand around checking out the scenery. In some cases that's O.K. (because even ruffians get to stand around), but if every non-quest related opponent does this... well, then I won't be completing the game.

Bethesda did say they would have encounters of the knights that are fighting mutants, if this is an answer to your concern. But I do share your concern too that the encounters might feel "fake" (like they wher e there just waiting for you, and not you walking in on them).
