Fallout 3's Third Person Camera

Morbus

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
Once again Fallout 3: A Post Nuclear Blog lets us know about Emil. This time he’s spoken in the forums to clarify a few things...
Hey all!

Sorry for the confusion. Let me clarify that a bit.

I meant, in general, the game is fully playable in third person. You can run around, adventure, get into combat ("run and gun") etc. all in third person, and the camera was designed to accommodate that kind of gameplay, unlike the third-person camera in Oblivion, which was more of a "vanity mode."

You can zoom the camera back pretty far in third-person, but there comes a point where it becomes less and less effective the farther back you pull the camera, just because you're so damn small and it's hard to gauge where the crosshair is at that point. So yeah, you can use third-person for combat, but the game wasn't really designed to be played with the camera pulled ALL the way back, isometric style. That's more for fun, and to survey the scene. It's really no different than any game that lets you zoom a third-person camera back.

A couple other points of clarification:

-- When you enter dialogue, the camera zooms into first-person.
-- When you enter V.A.T.S. the camera zooms into first-person.

If you were in third-person when you went into one of those mode, you're back in third-person when you come out.

So one can actually roam the wasteland in isometric perspective all the time except talking to people (which reminds me talking heads in Fallout 1-2; looks like in Fallout 3 everybody is going to be "talking heads") and V.A.T.S. (well. in original Fallouts we were having almost the same thing while aiming the body parts). The only thing is I don't think that building roofs will disappear if you enter them in such mode :(.

Maybe a gameplay video would be more effective than all of these clarifications, watcha think Emil ?
That's also my question !
Why don't they release a video of these stuff they are talking about ?!
the only things we have seen so far from Fallout 3 are a bunch of screenshots (which aren't too much) and a teaser ! that's All !!!

They know we're gonna bash 'em.
And we will.

My guess is: mere days before the game hits the shops and it will be too late to change anything. That's Todd's way of giving us the finger.

Why would I use a 3rd person view if the game isn't designed for it? It is not like I'm a retard and need to play my game that way. I will use what works best with the design, and according to him, that is first person. They are treating us like retards!

just because you're so damn small and it's hard to gauge where the crosshair is at that point.

The only way i can visualize this is that its a kind of Max payne type view, where really it is just a vanity camera, and its FPS. For a free camera to work, i would have thought the cross hair should be independent of the character, something like the witcher.

And normal fights in iso will probably will be pain in the ass.

From my pov TPS is pure shit anytime, so FPS in the best without an ISo view.
TES worked fine always with FPS camera, I'm used to Shooters in FP view and I don't think my Char in the middle of the monitor obstructing my view and the need to rotate the camera every 2 sec is something I'm going for.

So two thumbs up for FPS, fuck the rest....
Anyway ISo is the best, but we're not going to have it plus in 3D you need always to zoom, move the camera. So again FPS it's the last problem.

I personally loved Dungeon Siege. If showing off with 3D skill is the point, that's the way to go. The game was, by no means, an RPG, but had great potential. If someone was to add more thought in quests, story and overall design (and a decent character creation and combat system) it could be really awesome.

Hence the game's nickname, Dungeon Screensaver :D

True.

But in terms of a basis for building a decent RPG it sure beats Doom . . . It's got the viewpoint right, to say the least.

I agree that I don't know why people play with TPP in games that are designed for FPP but people do so it is nice that they are trying to make their TPP more playable, hopefully to the point of being equally good as FPP.

TPP works very well in some games but many shooters that use it don't change how aiming/the camera works from FPP so it feels sloppy but there are some that use it very well. Most games that use TPP well use it because they have melee and don't use an over the shoulder camera and some switch to FPP for aiming projectile weapons.

The more I play the Witcher, the more I wish they were making FO3.

I wished to see Fallout 3 with that engine, but still i think no one other then Leonard Boyarsky,Tim Cain and Jason Anderson can make Fallout 3 !
But that is toooooooooooo good to be true !
Fallout fans must face this fact : Fallout is dead and it is pointless to hope to see another fallout or even something similar to it !
