Fallout 4 and the "Paid Mod DLC" controversy

Knight In Leather Armor

Badger Nutsack
Ello NMA, I wanted to discuss something or simply rant.

I'll be talking about the Fallout 4 DLC being simply paid mods and how I agree and disagree with it.
Keep in mind this is all my opinion, so dun hurt me too hard pls

Anyways, let's talk about how the recent DLC's in Fallout 4 are considered paid mods.

The biggest example and probably the first is Wasteland Workshop. I haven't actually bought Wasteland Workshop, nor will I. Wasteland Workshop adds in new traps and basically an entire arena mode to Fallout 4. It's kinda stupid, as the trailer depicts the Sole Survivor, after leaving 111, immediately starts trying to tame the local wildlife to their own bidding. Which is... Eh..

Anyways, what does Wasteland Workshop give in exchange for 4.99$ US Money?

It adds the ability to capture and place creatures such as Deathclaws, Mirelurks, and other creatures, including NPC's such as Raiders and even kitty cats.

Now let's compare this mod to the Homemaker mod, a free mod which includes ten times the amount of decorations and new additions to settlements.
It includes decorations from both post-war and pre-war eras and even retextures several buildings such as brick buildings to look better.
With the mod you are capable of placing Institute decorations, refurbished, sanitary, rustic, so many new items such as new walls and everything.

Sadly, Wasteland Workshop adds so much less.
Yes, they do put in the unique feature of capturing enemies and making your own arena, which you could do with Homemaker, but it just isn't up to par with a user created mod. Sadly though, it doesn't matter, as most people defend it because Bethesda made Wasteland Workshop.

What about Automatron? Personally, I think it shouldn't be considered a paid mod like several people say. It's got a meh story with a terribad plot twist, but it offers a lot of customization that's up to par with mods and possibly even better. Building your own robots(with the annoying exception of Eyebots. Bethesda doesn't like ED-E.) is actually really fun and takes a lot of resources to make.

Compare it to Wasteland Workshop. Automatron is a little bit more pricey, but compared to Workshop it's so much better. Wasteland Workshop doesn't do anything but add in a few extra settlement options that feel like they should've been put into the game in the first place.

Tl;dr version? Wasteland Workshop is a paid mod and Automatron is a bit too pricey for how much it offers. Bethesda doesn't care though because they'll probably put in DLC that adds one new gun to the game to fill the 50$.

For Automatron, I would have said that if the story was written a lot better (has replayability etc) then yes, the price would be justified.
The notion of creating a robot is fun in itself, but then there's always the damage points and armour points. Instead of being about to Level up your Robot so they can upgrade their stats, you just want to upgrade it to the best gear which really takes away some of what would have made the game fun in my opinion.
If Automatron was half the price, then yeah, it would have been worth it. As it stands, it really isn't.

Wasteland Workshop is just cynical crap. As someone who has said that Bethesda releases good DLC (I know there was horse armour, but I was looking for that to be a one-off mistake) I'm annoyed they thought that was a good idea.
Especially since I thought the House DLC in Skyrim was a joke when I first found out what it was.

Edit. But back on the OG's post.
I wouldn't say they are selling mods, just stealing ideas for mods and selling them as DLC.

As Millim said, if Automatron was half the price, it would've been worth it. The robot crafting's pretty intricate, with plenty of variation. The quest's a mixed bag; good dungeon crawl with challenging new robot enemies, yet hampered by so-so writing and too short. Wasteland Workshop should have been a few bucks tops for the few new items, while the pre-existing stuff should have been released as a free update. The whole arena stuff doesn't even work. A total mess. Cynical doesn't even begin to describe it. I got the season pass at the lower price, and I feel cheated by how shoddy it is. It also doesn't help that people are making better mods than Wasteland Workshop period.

Hmm, to be fair, since the robot crafting aspect was already available in a mod, Bethesda should've just focused on the story aspect. That way, it can be a full-fledged story DLC surrounding the Mechanist or whoever/whatever new character they can add, and not called a paid mod. I always heard, again and again, that Bethesda's strong point lies in the DLCs but now... well, that's just me.

Both Automatron and Wasteland Workshop are the kinds of things that developers like CD Projekt Red would release for free. Automatron, while pretty stupid, at least has SOME amount of content. But there is no excuse for charging money for Wasteland Workshop - they would have done better to release it as a free update and build some goodwill among their fans. But then again if they cared about Fallout fans then Fallout 4 wouldn't be such dumbed down FPS with no role-playing.

There are about 16 FREE DLCs for Witcher 3, including new quests. Charging money for Wasteland Workshop is literally charging money for a more limited version of the stuff modders have already done or will be doing.

Considering how many Fallout fans feel sh*t on by Bethesda you'd think they might not release Horse Armor DLC 2 but that's basically what we're getting.

It's piecemeal DLC. Common, yet it was Bethesda themselves who introduced it to mainstream gaming, popularised it, got negative responses that made them infamous for it, then rejected it in favour of reasonable expansions. But now it's back to the same old grind. I'm more worried about actual paid mods. Not going to happen soon with all the thumbs down they've been getting, but it will happen once everything is nice and quiet.

They care about their Fallout fans. You know, the ones with overloaded wallets, all open and ready for grabbing. It's always easier to fuck over people who have already bent over.

Yeah, reaction hasn't been too great recently. There might be an official response soon.

Bethesda makes many mods obsolete, because they certainly can make anything on their games better due to having the manpower to make such great games.

That.

They would also not dare to try to use them to justify an overpriced season pass offering. TW3 season pass can easily get you another 20-30 hours of quests and gameplay.

I'm pretty sure the playtimes of those 2 witcher 3 expansions exceed the amount of non-procedurally-generated "content" in the entirety of Fallout 4.

Yea I haven't played the Witcher expansions yet but I'm glad I have those waiting for me, after the garbage that was Fallout 4 I need some actual quality quests and content that isn't an obvious cash grab such as $25 of paid mod Workshop DLC with a lazy rehash of The Superhuman Gambit quest tacked on.

I guess Bethesda will continue nicking mod ideas from their community and polishing them up so that it would be commercially sound. Vault Workshop is apparently similar to a certain mod, this one in fact: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/10603/?. I've never used it since I uninstalled FO4 but I hear that the mod is rather unpolished so I'm guessing that the upcoming DLC will be similar to this mod but more polished to meet with triple-A standards and the like.

I honestly cannot see Bethesda doing such a thing in their current state. CDPR, on the other hand, proved to be a different story. The free DLC program was a smart move on their part and being able to produce rich and fulfilling additional content like their two rather large expansion packs really sold me on Witcher 3 as a whole. I've played over 300+ hours of that game (played through the whole game twice) and I don't feel that my time was wasted in contrast the week I wasted with FO4.

I ought to replay Witcher 3 again one of these days.
