Fallout and ... Starcraft?

Corran

First time out of the vault
I did a search for fallout, starcraft. reference and i didn't see any other posts here, so I'd like to ask:

Who believes the StarCraft Campaign scenario entitled, "Wasteland" is a legit reference or easteregg-map pointing to the Fallout Series both because of the maps title AND the cliff doodad within the map that looks like a facility Entrance of some type with a '13' painted in the upper-left corner of the large door?

... that's one long question, but I believe I wrote it marginally correct... I hope.

Note: I'll post a screenshot via edit if anyone wants to see it. I don't remember it deing there, but I played it ~4+ yrs ago.

EDIT: here's the screenshot someone made-

i'm not sure, but i can remember seeing a exact replica of a vault door on other campaign map(sorry can't remember which), and there is a counterstrike map played inside a vault(a surprise to me).

de_foption is what the map is called

(actually it's a missile silo, but the door is more or less an exact replica of the FO vaultdoor (with number13 on it of course))

Hmmm. Replayed whole campaign + the demo one week ago, and can't remember anything like that.

[Edit]Did a quick search on BlizzForums, and didn't find anything.

do you mean the brood war campaign? i think it was an indoor level, but i'm not sure... i think that there was more than one fallout reference though. sorry but its been more than 3 months i played, and i'm damn tired of starcraft to check it out.

okay, i personnally see a bit of confusion. i'd like to restate my msg about the screenshot i posted at the start of this thread:

In StarCraft (notice no :BW or Brood War), the Terran Campaign (retail, not custom) has a scenario (level 2 or 3) called "Wasteland" that just makes you mine enough minerals to make 10 marines. In that map, there is a cliff doodad of a large metal door with a 13 painted on it, and I wanted to know if anyone knew about it, and whether Blizzard was making a direct reference to Fallout just like Fallout does to other games/media/historic events.

I have also read about custom maps trying to reference Fallout directly in their desgin, but that isn't what I am asking or care about because it's easy to do (Diablo, Final Fantasy, Zelda maps are made for WC3). I am not saying don't take about CounterStrke maps or anything, but please do make it clear that you are not talking about my post or the Fallout >< StarCraft topic Istarted this thread for.

If I was the only one confused, go ahead and call me stupid and we'll just move on.

Maybe is a joke of some sort  from the creators.Or in the team who makes the levels in the game is a friend whit some one in the Interplay :? .

To be honest, it looks like an easter egg by none other than Sharon Shellman. She did some of the Fallout artwork and then went onto Blizzard for awhile, then later ended up at Troika with her former co-workers for Arcanum. After that, I have no idea where she went, she wasn't one of my regular contacts though it was great talking to her however rare it was.

Though she is credited as cinematic art for both StarCraft and Brood War, and manual art for StarCraft, there's no way to really know unless the artist responsible says so, as these things are known for appearing without any warning or explanation.

Mobygames reference on Shellman said:
In the mid 90s, Sharon (or Shellman as she prefers to be known) decided the corporate world sucked, and she wanted to be an artist. So she taught herself some 3D packages, and got herself a job as a contract artist on Fallout. She did several exciting cut scenes for the game including the Exiting the Vault, Dipped in the Mutant Vats, and Blowing up the Mutant Vats, and several characters, including Dogmeat, the Death Claw, the Brahman and Mr. Handy. After completing Fallout, Shellman was stolen away by Blizzard. At Blizzard she helped make cut scenes for both StarCraft and Broodwar.

I love you, Sharon. ;)

The SC Fallout reference had come into light a few times in the past years, it's nice to know who do we own it to.

To clarify the matter, you can observe the Vault door doodad in the map editor, search in the Doodad palette of the Badland tileset.

This is OLD NEWS. I remember replying to a topic about this at DaC about a year and a half ago.

I also replied that there is a fan made map by the name of "Defend the Temple", if you find the waterchip and return it, you get special units, named "Fallout Merchandise"....

Ok, you found out.... I play Starcraft...

Heh, strange. Been playing StarCraft for all time since its release, and only now I realised that the 13 door is actually a refernce to Fallout.
Well, at the time when I payed attention to all those doodads I was not familiar with Fallout, so that's obvious.

Anyway, upon searching more, I couldn't find any more references in StarCraft.

And there is NO exact replica of the vault door in StarCraft! I'm freaking sure about that. You've probably confused it with some other game.

And Blizzard is very fond of making easter-eggs, just like Black Isle (RIP).

It's great when there is connection between these two greatest games. StarCraft being the GREATEST RTS of all time and Fallout - GREATEST RPG.

Sharon was the Troika Office manager for a long time till recently when she left the company to raise her kids. She went from being an artist to having to run the office. I believe her husband still works there as he was one of the founders

fallout and starcraft?

i just started playing fallout, and one of the biggest things that i noticed was just how much the atmosphere of the game is like that of those early starcraft missions that take place on the lawless terran planets. the terrain (desert mixed in with destroyed buildings, sand coming up on the tar) seems very similar in both games, and both play off the lack of order that exists (although the chaos in starcraft isn't caused by nuclear war). has anyone else noticed this?

Yeah, and even some of the enemy's are some what look-a-like but that is just because people can't identify them selves whit a dot(as to a great monstrosity of the master in F1) that can kill every other creature in the game. The dot kills (character name).

There's a Fallout easter egg in one of the Starcraft maps, if you look closely. Hint: it's Vault 13.
