Fallout and Windows 2000 Professional?

I just got the demo for fallout and as soon as you run falloutdemo.exe the screen goes blank and all there is is the hourglass cursor. When you press esc, this error message appears: "an privileged instruction was executed at address 0046bfd5, click on ok to terminate the application." So my real question is since the demo doesnt work, does that mean fallout 1 and 2 wont work?, because i just ordered the games. So if this is the case, then i need to get the demo running first of all.

My computer is a thinkpad 600x, pentium 500, video card: neomagic magicmedia256zx, directx version 9.0a. Directx seems to run fine.

Is it windows 2000 that is wrong. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
 
well I dont have the actual games yet, I ordered them from interplay on saturday. Its the demo that im trying to run. I hope that the actual game will run though.
