Is anyone else having this problem? I can install the demo just fine - but when I start it up I get a black screen and the dreaded frozen hourglass. Keyboard is unresponsive, though I can still use the mouse. Can't Alt-Tab back to Windows and I have to manually reset my computer.

This is my setup:

OS Name: Microsoft Windows ME - all updates installed
System Type X86-based PC
Processor Pentium(r) II Processor GenuineIntel ~300 Mhz
BIOS Version PhoenixBIOS 4.0 Release 6.0
Total Physical Memory 191.50 MB
Available Physical Memory 316.00 KB
Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.67 GB
Page File Space 1.81 GB
Installed on C Drive - 6 GB free, just defragged.
ATI-All-In-Wonder 128 Pro (32 MB)
Creative AWE64 16-bit Audio (SB16 compatible) Sound Card

Display Settings: 16 bit (High Color), 640 x 480
I've downloaded and reinstalled DirectX 8.0

Is there anything else that I can do to get the demo to actually run without freezing on startup? I've installed, run and completed FO1 and 2 with no problems. Any help would be HUGELY appreciated, especially since I'm about to get snowed in and would love to actually play this durn thing.

(hoping I don't have to upgrade my processor),

You should report this to the guys working on Tactics, they released largely for the purpose of complaints like two things: gameplay\balance issues, and the type of complaint you've just formulated.

I don't really think that there should be a problem there, but from experience I'd suggest you download again and\or reinstall, I've gotten cases of somehow-corrupted downloads in the past. Maybe even try a different source if any gives a legitimately fast download rate.

I can't confirm this works for everyone, but here goes..

Go to your FOTDemo directory. Then go to the "Core" directory in that. Open up the file that says, "bos.cfg" with Wordpad.

Look for the line that has (sound.provider) at the start of it, and change it to this:

{sound.provider} = {"No 3D Sound"}

Hope that helps.

i have a very simialr problem with the exception i can alt tab out.... also sharte teh same card me thinks this is definiteley yhe problem... forgive spelling just got back from work party.....

Thanks for all the responses guys - much appreciated.

It turned out that the problem was on my end. I have a sort of software sound card (in addition to the AWE64) that enables me to record streaming audio feeds from the web to listen to at a later date (yes, this is legal - I'm not actually saving the .ram file to my hard drive - just a .wav of the feed as the real audio player decodes and plays it back <grin>). As soon as I switched back to the AWE64 card as my <default> feedback/recording device FOT ran with no problems.

I'm so psyched - I actually got a chance to play the Oni and FOT demos before going back to work.

Happy Holidays to everyone!

Aw geez...at last someone has the same problem I have.
My setup is very different from yours.
Windows 98 4.10
AMD Duron at 750 Mhz
Riva TNT2 VPlus
Desktop resolution at 800*600 32 bit color
a VIA Motherboard that comes with an integrated sound chip and network card...whats weird is that the sound chip appears as an emulated device...I also have a Yamaha XG5 driver which also works as a sound card...
I have a 40 GB Hd in two 20 GB partitions which aren't even't 10% full
128 MB Generic Ram...

I also installed my demo and got the same problem. Black screen with frozen hourglass which moves but the cpu doesn't respond to keyboard input...Do you know if there is a walkaround this problem?
