fallout demo on win2k

.pablo.

First time out of the vault
hi all,
whenever i try to run the fallout 1 demo, it switches to a black screen for a few seconds, then crashes and gives me an error that says:

Application Error: E:\unzipped\falldemo\falldemo\Falldemo.exe
An privileged instruction was executed at address 0046bfd5
Click on OK to terminate the application.
I searched the forums, and although i found someone who had the same problem as me:

dude_obj:
Speaking of the fallout demo ... has anyone been able to run this on win2k? I have looked at all the source and graphics but I can't run the damn thing. The screen goes black and all I am left with is one of those hourglass timer icons. Then it crashes with a priviledged instruction exception.
i wasn't able to find any suggestions on how to fix it. i've read the stickies, but none of them seemed to apply to the situation i'm having. also, i haven't been able to find any kind of "compatibility mode" in my preferences when i right click shortcuts.

My computer:
Windows 2000
P3 1ghz
512mb ram
geforce 4 ti4200

thanks for any suggestions, i really look forward to trying out this game!

you have to activate compatability mode.

1.Log on as Administrator or be a member of the
Administrators Group.
2.Click Start, and then click Run.
3.In the Open box, type the following command, and then
click OK, where %SystemRoot% is the drive and folder in
which Windows is installed:
regsvr32 %systemroot%\apppatch\slayerui.dll

thanks for the info, i was able to get compatibility mode to show up in a shortcut to the executable...

i then tried:
running the game in win98 compatibility mode
running the game in win95 compatibility mode
running my desktop at 800x600 and 16bit color with both of the above options

but the game still crashes and gives me the same error...

i have the same problem on win xp sp 2 and i don't have the slayerui.dll installed on my system...

i got the demo to run using the compatibility mode, but the lag is enormous and the game can't be played :(

Dosbox would be the standard recommendation here. I got the too-laggy-to-play thing too in XP, but could play it on a much slower W98 although the fades were painfully slow.

Uh? Dosbox is for DOS, this is Windows application.

Amazing resurrection, but I think Per is referring to getting the DOS version of the demo instead.
