Fallout DS

First time out of the vault
I want to do the original Fallout as a homebrew port for the Nintendo DS, to run via flash cart and linux. I've got much thinking to do, however, and want some input.

Here's the bit we've gotta think about.

DS flash devices use minisd cards, the most common and cheap of these being the 1gig. Thus, Fallout DS is going to need to install and run at less than 1 gig, including the swap space needed, which I'll go into.

To this end, I suggest we strip the cinemas down to a slideshow with subtitles, and eliminate all the voices. This should put us WELL within the space requirements, and probably help run the motherfucker too.

Next, FO requires 16Mb of ram to run in winblowz and DX 3.0a, and the Nintendo DS has 4MB built in. To cover running FO on 4MB, we're going to need to set aside some of that 1gig for swap space. This is also going to hurt the performance of the game, as the swap is slow. I'm going to look into it, but we might need to trim lots of frames out of walking and such to make the real time part of FODS not make us all kill ourselves over lag.

Since homebrew on the DS requires some linuxy lovin (Moonshell), we're going to need to factor those requirements into running it. If any of you information lugging bastards have any info about FO linux before I go from here to read up, let me know.

Hmm, I'm sure I've forgotten lots and lots of things that are going to make this nearly impossible. However, instead of a rallying cry to start up the suicide project, I guess I'm looking for input.

Any wastelanders in the hizzy up on their DS? Is this even a project that would appeal to anyone besides myself? Even if we get it ported, would you lovely chaps be willing to see your beloved treasure stripped down like I mentioned above in order to hear the delicious sounds of 10mm smg shredded meat hitting the floor... in the john? On the bus? Turned way down and held close to someone's ear from behind before you take your revenge?

So yeah, this is a general call to arms for any true sons of the vault who are also into DS, or potentially into this project, or even anybody who feels like offering suggestions, etc.

[zealot commentary] If they can rehash every other goddamn video game from 90s on DS and sell them for 30 bucks a pop, I demand that it be recognized that Fallout is far and above more worthy of a portable version than shitty playstation games, and ABSOLUTELY fucking contrary to what Beth says, in this day and age isometric turn based combat, in depth role playing games have a bigger market than ever. Check the sales figures on the DS, kids. It's a no brainer for anyone except those fucking corpse rapists responsible for the travisty to their own franchise that was Oblivion. And touch screen Fallout would be just like mouse only Fallout. (slightly less fast, but easier to uh.. use your other hand while playing)

(No, I'm not going to try to market this) [/zealot commentary][/b]

Why do people *still* not post in the right parts of the forum? It's not like it's hard to actually read forum descriptions.

I would have been more ardent in my examination of the descriptions had I lurked additionally before posting and thus realized the siege of misplaced posts NMA is under. My apologies.

Just figured to say, I'd be into such a project. I've got a DS Lite, and I could just pick up some miniSD cards from work. I'd need some help doing all this stuff, though. I have light knowledge of the stuff you're talking about here, so I'd need some instruction as I go.

I admire your aspirations and would love to see this work. But, wouldn't it make much more sense to do this on the PSP, since PSP is more powerful then DS. This way, you wouldn't have to strip fallout down so much.

Hey, you coming in and telling him to put it on the PSP is the same as me going and telling you guys to put it on the DS (which I did, I'm already sorry about doing that). Let him come up with ways of doing it on the DS. By the way, how is you guys' project coming?

Thanks for the big up gents.

Yeah, PSP would be easier from a tech standpoint, assuredly. That's one of the big first questions I've gotten. However, the touch screen action, and the fact that a lot of the interface in the original fo was dual screened anyway makes me want to do it up big N.

So is this tell that there's some PSP fallout already happening? That'd be cool to see, even if the DS proves to be too nerfy to hook it up?

We're still doing a lot of research about DS homebrew. I'll post it up when we get something going on though, assuredly.

No need to be hostile mate, it was just a suggestion. I have neither of the consoles, so personally, I do care less what console it goes for.

Oh, I thought you were one of the guys who's trying to do the same thing for PSP. Not trying to be hostile, I just come off that way sometimes. :)

Once you realize, and I mean, REALLY realize, how much memory Fallout _needs_ to consume in the best case scenario, what with the super-optimized caching and all, and how much other stuff goes on in there, not to mention DS 256x192 resolution, the whole thing kind of becomes a joke, you know ?

Plus... did they even release the source ?
