Fallout for DS

First time out of the vault
A lot of people have been complaining about how Fallout 3 isn't fallout-y enough. I got the idea yesterday that a great place for classic fallout to flourish would be nintendo ds.

turn based would make more sense, the graphics wouldn't have to be that good. I'm sure they could even put the touch screen to good use, to select weapons, dialogue choices, you could even have a good old fashioned text box so everyone can still see the old "player smacks the shit out of raider for 600 points". imagine being able to bring fallout whereever you go. thoughts?

It's a completely viable idea, though the upper size limit of DS cartridges is 128 MB (more commonly, they're labeled in the Gbit scale, which would be 1 Gb), and that may be somewhat problematic if the game length and uniqueness in assets is akin to the first two titles. Granted, a good deal of the content, in terms of memory usage, in the first two titles is sound, and it's pretty easy to scale way back on that aspect for portables. Memory might be one of the more challenging aspects of developing a true Fallout game on the DS.

There are certainly many interesting possibilities for an RPG like Fallout on the DS. The Pip-boy could float on the top screen, while the PC, world, inventories and so on would reside on the bottom screen. Targeted shots would actually be somewhat interesting, and there are probably a number of fun and inventive things you could do with the dual-screen/touch-screen DS.

However, it's unfortunate at this point that Bethesda has purchased all rights to the Fallout IP, which means Interplay could no longer authorize development of a Fallout spin-off (or otherwise) for any platform. You can bet your ass that Bethesda has no interest in delivering a Fallout game on portables that many of us would actually like to see -- and, in fact, many of us would rather Bethesda only make Fallout 3 and then abandon the IP altogether.
