Fallout MUD - Would you play?

Dialtone

First time out of the vault
Since I'm a glutton for punishment, I've been thinking of building a Fallout themed MUD. In contrast to some the other post-apocalyptic MUDs out there, mine would be based entirely on the FO series. I would try tostick the "canon" of the original series, perhaps adding elements from the Fallout PnP RPGs out there.

So, my question, since MUDs are being replaced by MMOs is...Would you play on a Fallout themed MUD?

If so, what suggestions do you have, or features would you like to see?

Thanks!

While it's a neat idea, I don't think I'd find myself playing it more than the initial first time. MMO's have evolved from MUD's and unfortunately most people enjoy a more graphical game over having to use their imaginations. I could be wrong, but I get the feeling you want feedback here, both positive and negative.

On the other hand, if the story line is immersive enough and jumps out to players right from the beginning it has real potential, so I guess if the game were developed enough it could get me to play. Also we can't forget about die hard MUD players that are also around.

Good luck, sorry I can't be of more help.

Thanks for the reply and yes I want feedback as to yes or no for the same reasons you mentioned. I too see MUDs being replaced by MMO's much like the Internet/Web replaced dial-up BBSes (something I used to run as well :( ).

Any and all comments appreciated.

Oh yes, I'm a uber-noob, but what is a MUD?

Anyway, it sounds cool, but wouldn't it be hard to create your own online game? Assuming a MUD is an online game.

Having read up on that, wouldn't it extremely difficult playing a real-time multiplayer text-based game?

I would love to play a fallout mud! I used to play a swr (star wars reality) mud based off the smaug codebase. I enjoyed the server I was on and believe their server is still around today. I think a smaug or swr codebase would be the place to start, but I don't know the features of many other muds since I haven't played too many other muds. Star Wars allowed for blasters in the same room, or to snipe in a direction at someone. But also allowed for vibroblades/lightsabers. It may be a starting place

As far as features, I don't know how much of a coder you are. (I write assembly for windows, and I have not studied enough of writting assembly for linux to write any of the code, my C++ isn't the best :-\) There was a "roguelike" mud at one point I forget the name of it, but they built a dynamic map system in the theme of rogue/nethack/angband and would update it ever room you entered so you could explore that way. This map helped with ranged fighting as you could see what kind of creatures were a couple rooms away or whatever. They had a random dungeon generator that would create new dungeon levels every 5 min or so (but not on levels that players were on of course).

I would love to help as an immortal, maybe a builder too, but my creativity skill are probably too lacking to write extremely nice descriptions...
