Fallout on MAC with parallels desktop

First time out of the vault
Hello,

I tried to install Fallout (1 or 2) on my MacBookPro with OSX via parallel desktop.
Everything works fine until I launch the game. Then the colors switch to 16, which makes the game look very ugly obviously.
Apart from that, everything is cool : smooth animation, smooth sound, smooth saves, smooth everything ... but ugly graphics.
I tried all sort of compatibily options, including "force the game to run at 256 colors" but it always switches to 16.

Anyone here with an idea of how to handle this with parallel ?
I know bootcamp would help but hey, I already bought parallel for fallout !

Hey thanks for replying,

However, those people talk about the MAC version of fallout (unless I'm mistaken). I talk about the PC version running through XP installed on Parallel Desktop.
Or maybe the actual version of OSX preventing to use 256 colors on games would also prevent their use through Parallel ?

I'll try and upgrade to 10.5.5 anyway.

EDIT : actually I am under OSX tiger, 10.4.11. It seems to support 256 colors since I can choose it in the display preference menu. It does not solve the fallout problem under parallel though. Consequently, I think upgrading to 10.5.5 would not solve the problem.

Anyway, I also noticed that directx does not work correctly on my XP/parallel. Tests in dxdiag (white box bouncing, turning square...) do not show anything on my screen...

Ah, thought you'd have 10.5 since you have a MacBook. In that case, I have no idea what's going wrong. Try booting into XP and see if directx works there; the windows installation might be misbehaving.

Hello,

After a little more research I could not manage to have fallout 1/2 running under parallels : still the same problem of switching to 16 colors.
I managed to launch the game in normal colors once by ... uninstalling the video drivers of parallels tools ! However, it screwed right after a single click. I think there is something wrong with directx/video drivers install but I cant figure out what at the moment.

Nevertheless, here are some stuffs that might help people having the same troubles :
- Never manually install directx under XP under parallels. Instead, install parallels tools, they contain their own version of directx (8.0 as fas as I know). Installing your own directx might corrupt video.
- Don't forget to check "allow directx" in the video configuration before running invited OS.
- Still in the configuration panel, it is not necessary to allow a lot of memory if you plan to play "old games". I read that 412 Mo is enough and even that allowing too much memory may decrease efficiency of the OS.

Finally, note that the site of parallels mentions fallout 2 as a "working game" under parallels, so I maintain hope.

You could also try running it under Wine, and see how that works. There's a Mac version now that Apple switched to x86 architecture.
