Hey anyone want to help me out here? Fallout keeps freezing whenever I try walking out of the Vats. Formerly it would just give me an illegal memory address allocation type thing, but now it just plain stops. All I need to do is get out of the Vats and have it explode. The timer is set and everything.

The saved game is at http://www.g6net.com/~chris/slot04.zip

I'll arrange some way for me to get it back from you if you can do it.

Thanks.

I may be able to provide some assistance. I have downloaded the file and I have e-mailed it home. Unfortunately, it'll be about 8 hours before I get home, get the e-mail, fire up Fallout, load the save game and....

....I presume you just want someone to walk out of the vats? You want them to travel somewhere or just into the square next to the vats or something?

I'll then save the game and upload it to my freeyellow site for you to download again (and pray that it works).

Unless some-one else beats me to it that is....

Hey great! Thanks.

Would you mind saving one where the character is at the entrance to the vats, and maybe at some location in the desert? Fallout got really weird on me and I don't know if just being at the entrance to the vats will work... I might be stuck on that map as well... damn old engine...

Thanks again.

Well.... I have some GOOD NEWS!!!

I can tell you, with 100% confidence, that XP has absolutely nothing to do with your problem!!

Yes! You guessed it! It freezes mine up to :| I tried saving the file again, I deleted files, reloaded then saved again, dropped the radio (seemed to be an interesting connection between the radio and the countdown, every time I use the radio, the countdown went down 1 second. Might not have anything to do with it though....). Anyway, I think the countdown DOES have something to do with it because every time I move on the green exit grid..... Nothing. The lights on my hard drive flash a little, and I even get a brief glimpse of the Fallout loading world globe.... And then nothing.

I killed Ian, I moved around the base. I tried everything I could think of. No luck I'm afraid. Whenever I tried to go down to level 3, it crapped itself with an "illegal operation" error. Soo.... If you have another save game with the Military Base save files in it... You *might* be able to copy them over into that save game. It probably won't work. But it's all I can think of.

Sorry I couldn't help you out anymore than that.

Damn..... well thanks for trying... I tried it even with the DOS version of Fallout (patched that is, and yes, it actually ran on XP)... I'll have to see if I can find an older saved game... damn, that was a good character.

Too bad the game isn't supported anymore...

No map location hacks either... dammit.

Wonderful... I manage to get out of the Vats as quick as possible to see if wandering the desert will fix things and it turns out that anywhere I go I can't move more than three screens or the game will freeze... what is this some kind of map-limiting cache or something? Sheesh.

It sounds like that game is well and truly F**ked Up Beyond All Recognition. I wonder how it happened? It must have become corrupt at some point in time, perhaps?

[font size=1" color="#FF0000]LAST EDITED ON Jun-25-02 AT 04:52AM (GMT)[p]Here-in lies your problem (taken from here: http://user.tninet.se/~jyg699a/fallout2.html the fallout walkthrough rosh just posted on the main page)

There's a particular bug I want to tell you about right away, because when it strikes, you won't necessarily have any clue what causes it. I don't know exactly how it works technically, but what happens is that late in the game, if you have too many (different) items in one location, this will eventually corrupt maps. The number of items in question includes what you and your NPCs are carrying, the items on critters and in containers on the map (including shops), plus the stuff in your car no matter if it's present or not. The bug "triggers" upon leaving an area, and means that next time you try to enter that map, your computer will lock up completely. Many people have reported this behaviour; you'll notice how the "orbiting rocket" mouse pointer shows up on the screen, but doesn't animate. The hard drive might buzz for a while then fall silent. Depending on your system you may have to turn your computer off entirely. If you reload the game the same thing will happen again eventually, or right away if the save includes the broken state of the map you're trying to enter (but since a map goes bad only when you leave it, the current map of each save will never be corrupted, thankfully). Maps will become corrupted more frequently as you continue to play and amass items, making the game nearly (or literally) unplayable towards the end.

The simplest way to prevent this from happening is to avoid carrying around quest items which you have no further use of. If you want to keep them, don't store them in your trunk but in some accessible container on a map where there are no shops, or where there are not too many items anyway. If you want to be doubly safe, avoid selling too many different items in one place. If you're not in the habit of hoarding items, this will probably not be an issue.

Ian is carrying a s**t-load of gear isn't he? Pounds and pounds of the stuff. I never did figure out how you loaded it all on to him.

And here's how to solve it:

If a map in a saved game has been corrupted, there is no way (known to me, at least) to restore it, but you can work around the problem. What you must do is find the corresponding file from an earlier save and replace the bad file with it. For instance, San Francisco Chinatown, which is the map where this might well happen to you the first time (two big shops), is "sfchina.sav" - use the Ctrl-R trick to find the right map if you're in doubt. Critters and items on the map will revert to what they were in the previous save, but quest and dialogue status as well as the location and contents of your car are stored elsewhere and so are not affected. Some NPCs will disappear forever if you had left them standing on the broken map; e.g. Myron does, but Sulik, Vic and Cassidy will probably be around. (You may also on the "fixed" map encounter duplicates of party members left behind elsewhere, and you can kill these and take any stuff that the real NPC was carrying, but this would be cheating.)

Hmm... that could explain a lot... I'm a huge packrat in that game and Ian is carrying more weapons and shit than every shop and person in the entire game combined (gotta love that barter-bug/feature)... he probably weighs about as much as a small cruiser...

I'll have to get all my NPCs together and then start replacing maps like mad...

I did try replacing files with "known" good ones... but I fear they may all be bad... I wonder if I just delete the map altogether if Fallout will just load a clean one from the dat file..

Thanks for your help.

Isn't it when you can barter with your NPCs and the weight isn't counted? Something like that? But damn Xotor.... Ian is holding a shed-load of tools.... Just how many miniguns do you need? :)

Glad I could help though.

He's carrying about 65 miniguns, 30 or something flamethrowers, probably 100-200 pistols of different varieties, and about the same in rifles... but no spiked knuckles because he likes to use those when his clip is out of ammo, instead of reloading.

I even spent time to break into the Vats' armory (spent some skill points to up my lockpicking). I found even more shit. I probably haven't left any place unlooted. I guess I should leave some of it in a storehouse in the game...

Rosh: That game bug/lack of oversight is the barter/steal system of giving your NPCs items. The NPCs act like a "shop" when the player barters with them to give them items, and like a shop, they have limitless space. Normal stealing to plant items on NPCs has its limits (like when you have Tandy following you around), but the barter system doesn't.

Since it was made for Windows 95 (note the 95), it has a version number attached to the EXE itself making it so it can't be run on Win 2K+ machines. You'll need to use the workaround on Fallout 1 to install it. I think Fallout 2 is okay.
