Fallout Restoration Project?

First time out of the vault
Hi there.. I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right place, so please forgive me if I'm not.

I've recently purchased the 'Fallout Collection' on disc and installed it. It includes Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics. I was hoping to install the Fallout Restoration Project and take advantage of the additional content and all, but I can't figure out how to get it to work.

I don't even get as far as getting it installed - because it insists on saving it to the 'Programs/Black Isle/Fallout 2' directory... however mine is saved in a directory called 'Programs/Interplay/Fallout 2'.

Am I able to even install the restoration project if I've installed the game with a disc, or do I need to actually download the game instead?

Are you running Vista/7? The issue is that installing to C:\Program Files with UAC enabled causes mayhem for many games. The RP installer wants to install wherever you have Fallout2.exe.

My suggestion is to reinstall everything to a different location other than Program Files and then try the RP installer again.

Okay, thanks I'll give that a try. ^^ I'll try making a new folder on my Desktop and installing it there.

Also, I had torrented Fallout 2 a while ago, before I bought the disc. I think maybe it will be better if I can find anything left over from that and uninstall it. Because I do /have/ a program file for Black Isle, and then Fallout 2. But it's a dead link inside.

And yeah, I have Windows 7 Professional. I'm also kinda annoyed that for some reason the game won't run in Windows XP Mode, but when I play it in Windows 7 the colour is a little bit distorted. Still playable, but the cut-scenes aren't even a little bit viewable. x.x

Grrr, this is really frustrating... Every time I try to uninstall the version of the game I originally had (I guess this is what I get for torrenting) it gives me this error: 'Uninstall could not open or cannot use the following log file, 'C:/Program Files/Black Isle/Fallout2/uninst.log'. Uninstallation cannot continue.'

Just delete the folder and be done with it :)

Then re-install your disc copy of Fallout 2 to somewhere else than Program Files.

Then use the RP installer to install the RP in your new location.

Run the game. When you're in the main menu, click "OPTIONS". An extra menu should pop up asking you to choose between game options and graphic options. Choose the latter. Set the game to a resolution that will work on your computer (you don't have to do that, but I totally recommend it) and set colour output to 32 bit. This will remedy the colour glitches you're experiencing.

Have fun.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try that when I get home after work, and I'll post if it works or not. Although last night I used the disc and just installed to my desktop, and then when I was choosing a location to save the RP to it didn't give me the option to choose the Desktop under the list. x.x

You don't have those options at main menu, cause HiRes patch shipped with RP is older. Click on options, then look up in settings screen, there is a button on top in the middle. Press on it and you'll be at resolution settings screen.
Good luck

Even after just deleting the Black Isle/Fallout 2 folder, it keeps telling me that I have to save the RP to that location! This is getting insane, I just want to get the best out of my Fallout 2 experience. TT_TT

I haven't even been able to get the RP installed at all yet.

It seems you'll need to fiddle with your registry files. My knowledge about this stuff is weak at best, so I'll try to get some more insight and return to you.

Either some good soul helps you or just wait until I can find the relevant info.

CCleaner is a free download and it includes a utility to clean the rubbish out of your registry. I use it all the time. After every single uninstall in fact. It will ask you if you want to back up your registry first, and you really really should.

@Drobovik: There is a Russian translation of RP 2.12b? Who knew? BTW what happened to the NMA Russian forum?

I've already tried cleaning the registry with CCleaner (I like the program and already had it). It didn't seem to work.. I may have done something wrong though?

Thank you very much though, Ardent and Teukros for your help.

Ok, what you should do if installer does not work for you is to download manual install archive from killap.net or Killap's signature. Then follow instructions VERY closely.
This way it's not connected to any particular folder, just like portable versions of software programs.
Good luck, comrade.

Thanks! I'll post back after work (still have hours and hours to go x.x) and let you guys know if the manual installation works.

I have success!!! You guys ALL rock! <3

It turns out that the manual installation worked like a charm, I have the additional content, fixes, and it's pretty now to boot. You guys have this gal's love forever. :)

The next version RP 2.2 will be out soon, but yeah the RP is a great addition to the Fallout world...enjoy.

I realised you fixed it, but I wanted to add that this problem can also be fixed by manually searching the Registry for fallout references and removing them all.
I doubt CCleaner or any other program will get rid of all the references itself, I always find its best to do it by hand.
