Fallout Running in DOS/8bit color mode

First time out of the vault
Salutations, I have a few questions about Fallout 1 and 2 running on XP. Ive just purchased White Label 3 in 1 package 1.2 (F1/2/Tact) Installed the game and attempted to play F1. I relized that the color/graphics are DOS version or just low color bit. I attempted to change res and and use Medium 16 bit but still nothing. I searched all over the web until I ran into this site and searched for an hour on the search criteria concerning this matter but nothing. Is there a way to run Fallout 1 and 2 on Medium 16 Bit for XP? Or am I just out of luck?

-Thanks

Read the Troubleshooting FAQ, under "XP problems", and see if that helps.

Hello again, I appriciate you leading me in the right direction, but unfortunatley I tried that about 3 hours ago and nothing. Same problem. Any other suggestions? Not sure if this matters but ...Fallout 1 and 2 run without the CD, Tactics needs the CD to run.

-Thanks

Yeah...so did this "searching for an hour" include reading the other stickies as well?

And people wonder why we get a tad irate when people are too lazy to fully explain a technical issue, even when we clearly point out what is expected, then people go off whining on other forums that we're "mean" whenever someone comes onto this forum and says "game broke", and then say "tried that 3 hours ago" to a proposed solution, which would be very pertinent information to know what you've supposedly tried to do. No, we don't care to play Twenty Questions with every computer-illiterate fool.

In other words, it doesn't fucking matter what color depth the desktop is set to, it's not going to change the in-game graphics color depth or resolution. Unless you mean that it won't run at that color depth and shows a black screen, which you haven't explained worth shit yet. The fix for that is also in the stickies.

So, really, what's the fucking problem?

(BTW: Yes I have read the other stickies) The problem is.. I cannot get Fallout 1 or 2 to run in the same color mode as it did when I played them for WIN98 years back. When I play them on WINXP. The color seems low quality and not as good as it did on WIN98. No, i'm not having any Black, Blue, Green Screens or any Sound Glitches. Its simply the low detail color depth and the poor resolution. I don't know how to explain the problem better that that. :?

Take a screenshot and post it, otherwise I can't really believe "low color depth and the poor resolution". Fallout only displays in one resolution unless you use a mod to increase that resolution, which doesn't play well and makes the interface look off.

As Rosh said, there's no such thing as different resolutions or colour depths in this game. Fiddle with your monitor if you like, but it's not a software problem.

WinXP with new monitors and graphics cards fucks with both Fallouts' gamma levels, making it appear a whole lot shittier than normal. That's the problem 90% of the time.

There's a number of ways around it, but the best one is the following:
Download Powerstrip (you'll need the cracked version eventually). Install. Run Powerstrip. Run Fallout. Alt tab out of Fallout then hit whatever hotkeys to adjust the monitor's gamma levels through Powerstrip. I have to increase the gamma around 20 times before tabbing back into the game. When you tab back in it should look normal. You can always alt tab out and make further adjustments with contrast and other settings.
The trick is you cannot have Fallout on the screen. It MUST be minimized in order for any changes to work.

Another "fix" is to download D3DWindower and run the game through there. Set the monitor to somewhere between 640x480-800x600 before running so as not to have a tiny fucking window.
