Has anyone noticed the similarities between the world depicted in Fallout vs. our own? I mean, take a look at Swing and Big Band music, and how they're making a come back. Also, look at our concept cars... they continue to resemble those which were created in the 1930s-40s. However, the apocalypse, which created the wastes in Fallout, occurred during the later part of the century (closer to the current date)... and their technology was very similar to our own. So, the only thing that was different was the "scene." but, as I said, our "scene" is steering towards that which was depicted in Fallout. Just thought the similarities between our two worlds was interesting.

Uh, there aren't many similarities in the game and our world. Other than it's in the US. Swing isn't comming back, and Big Bands are dead. Boy Bands now run rampant. Cars are becoming smaller and more fuel efficient. Look at the Toyota Prius: Compact and electric assisted. The Highwayman was actually an antique left in the wastes like you'd find an antique car nowadays. And are you saying that the superwar occured at the later part of their century? We just started a new one, and with thte way thigns are going in Israel it is possible that war is immenant. but those puke desert countries wouldn't do anything to anyone.

Seen any of the GAP commercials lately? Or how about the Dodge Prowler? Ever heard the Squirrel Nut Zippers? Not saying that it's an exact replica of our own world... just saying that there are some similarities between the two. And I do think that swing and big band music is making a come back to some extent... one of Intel's commercials for the P3 featured the song "put a lid on it" by the Squirrel Nut Zippers. Also, have you ever heard of the Cherry Popping Daddies? They are another New Age Big Band. I can name quite a few movies that have featured New Age Big Bands. I do agree with you about the Arab countries. O, here's another thing, there has been talk of Quebec separating from Canada (Quebec actually held a vote on it a couple years ago, and it was close)... if that were to happen, then Canada's economy would plunge, and there has been talks of the U.S. actually annexing Canada if that were to happen. And yes, if I remember correctly, the war in Fallout occurred sometime during the first century of the new millennium.

My opinion is : Fallout 2 critisizes Western Society !!! Fallout 2's World is a caricature of our world, but surround by wastes ! See : it talk about racism (Gecko vs. Vault City) The "enclave" (Haha ! :-) ) in California (You know, these are cities surround by a wall, which have there owns laws and rules in order to prevent themselves from exterior world (Again Vault-City)). New Reno show us crime and Mafia which corrupt politicians. Only Broken Hills is a kind of free city in all that mess... So, Yep ! Our world and Fallout's one are similar. Programmers only added funny stuff as 50s' look of VaultTec video (as in the time of the cold war =>Fear of nuclear world war); and after all, Fallout world was built on our world's wastes !

Retrotech:

The world of Fallout is based upon retrotech, the old pulp sci-fi of the 40's and 50's. Shortened from it's original form of 'retro-theoretical technology', it's the future as depicted in the past.

That's why Fallout uses that era of 'design' and also music.

RE: Retrotech:

"Retrotech"...indeed! And i love every last single bit of it all! Yes, in a lot of your games/movies you will find some sort of a "current" political agenda and or theory that has been incorporated into the plot. Star Trek is a good example of this as well.

Fallout 1 maybe, but fallout 2 got a little carried away, or if you seriously think that genetically engineered super-bosses with plasmacannons etc. are retro(it's just boring), i would adwise you to swallow this message twice before answering "negative".

Don't get me wrong, i have too wached UFO's from the sixties and other old and crappy movies...

F2 is one quarter retro and rest boring sci-fi

RE: Retrotech, eh?

Well, i was talking about how our worlds (before the war in Fallout) were similar. i wasn't talking about the period in which the game takes place... however, i do see some things that are in Fallout, which eventually, we might consider part of our own reality. if you look at the humor in Fallout and the pre-war scene... it's very much retro. i love the Fallout intro movies... look at Pip Boy, he's quite the tool for propaganda. if he's happy, then you should be too. :)

It's obvious you have no idea what retrotech means. So thank you for playing, and here's a home version of the game of Life.

Retrotech doesn't meand 'stone age' or 'medieval', it means the sci-fi of yesteryear.

RE: Retrotech, eh?

Roshambo, i think ana3 was talking about the actuall game play it's self. the feeling/intro/setting of Fallout is based on "the sci-fi of yesterday," but the actuall game play it's self strays from that(Exp: super mutants).

RE: Retrotech, eh?

He's Bert the Turtle! He knows what to do when the bombs come...

DUCK AND COVER!

Yes, kids, that's right----

DUCK AND COVER!

Bert-Bert-Bert-Bert-Bert the Turtle!

PIPBoy is somewhat (Note: Not entirely or mostly, SOMEWHAT) based upon Bert.

Agreed:

Last I knew, we were talking about the setting, not the gameplay. Mutants were a part of retrotech (aliens and scientific experiments...I wish I still had the pulp that my father had out of storage...WONDERFUL stuff), and in "Invasion from Planet Z", the aliens turned the people into mutants of themselves.

Agreed...the setting wasn't as dark, however as far as retrotech is concerned, it could have sparse or a plethora of weapons, because it's just sci-fi either way. Agreed, Fallout 2 lost the post-apocalyptic setting, because there was too many weapons and too much humor inserted into the game.

Chris Taylor echoed this when I talked to him on the phone, that it was a case of everyone wanting to put in their own little secrets and it became a bit filled with them.

I'd agree that a few e-e's are nice...but for the most part, they could do like in M&M7, and do a City in a Bottle with a giant easter egg.

ana3 went a little bit mentally ambiguous again in the discussion, and confused retrotech with post-apocalyptic.

RE: Retrotech, eh?

DAC had a LOT of stuff on Bert....wished it was still up.

But of course, you've seen some of those cartoons or clips from the missle-crisis/scare era instructional videos, right? Notice the style of the first manual, and a bit of the second. The cartoon in the second game's intro is just a complete parody of Bert and those movies, but using Robco Pipboy instead.

RE: Agreed:

i have a bunch of cool stuff that was made during the cold war era. i have some of the old student hand outs (glossy) which i have framed and hangin on my wall. they show a boy scout leading his class mates (in an orderly fashion) into their school Fallout shelter with a smile on his face. pluss i have a bunch of old manuals that were sold at auctions that were from govt offices and such... really awesome reading. they talk about different types of shelters and buildings and how to create your own Fallout shelter, etc... just a bunch of really cool shit. pluss i have these two books on nuclear war survival... it lists all the targets within the U.S.A., where the Fallout would travel and much much more. like, it tells you how to build your own water system and how much iodine you'd need to get rid of a certain amount of radiation, etc... it's all good. :)

RE: Agreed:

Wonderful stuff, isn't it?

And the pulp of that ers is even better than today, IMO. A lot of the comics and stuff today are utter crap, where the earlier ones were full of imaginative genius.

I have a few old nuclear survival manuals lying around...I'll have to dig them up again.

RE: Agreed:

Yeah, it's so funny how the government was able to gain the support and trust of the people like that... people were so naive back then *as i connect to the Internet while talking to my friend over the cell phone*. Seriously though, i love the blatant propaganda. I love the way they make all these characters seem so happy and content with big brother. We now look back and think... god, the American public must have been complete tools to believe that shit!!! Tell you what though... what's scary is that our children will most likely say the same thing about our generation. Yeah, I’ll tell you what separates our culture from the 1930s-60s... CLASS!!!! We have no CLASSS what so ever!! Man, look at the cars they sold back then... they had class, whereas we only have hard/cold steel techno. We have Brittany spears... they had Judy Garland. We have rap, they had jazz. They say you can judge the future from the paste... i completely agree. Look at how extravagant we are, it's just like the roaring 20s/Rome. Humanity has a pattern to it... here it is: war, uplifting victory, 20 years of prosperity, people start to forget what they fought for, people loose interest and become narcissistic, society crumbles, war *repeat loop*.

Only thing is that back in Rome, this pattern took much longer due to the lack of communications. Any ways, our generation is just as vulnerable to the influences of the media and government. Want some examples aye? Here are some:

A very large % of college professors are signed members of the communist part.

Industries higher psychologists and sociologists to market their products (position of a booth in a store, etc.)

Political parties do the same as the various industries

Bias media

Just so many... any ways, i don't know where i am going with this... no, i do know, but i don’t want to go there... i could write a book on it all. sighhh, my eyes are trying to close on me... any ways, i kinda went off track there a bit i guess. Any ways, yeah, i love the retro scene... it's fun.

RE: Agreed:

Yes, they ARE doing it today. People actually believes the shit that Bill Clinton and his big old intravenous needle (the media) injects into all of the bullshitted folks out there. Seriously, this is a great country but the old guys running it are what makes me recite the fake pledge of allegiance from Hysteria in the morning at school.

I pledge Ally Sheedy
to the slag
of the United Skates of Emilio
And to the repugnant
for Richard Stanz
one naked
undergarment
with Liberace and Puffed Rice for all!

RE: Retrotech definition

[font size=1" color="#FF0000]LAST EDITED ON Nov-08-00 AT 01:34PM (GMT)[p]To put it simply, it means: "Things that were supposed to happen but didn't" like nuclear warfare and hovering cars. There was this tv show that was made in 98 and was black-white color and was all retro, i loved that show.

No, to put it simply it's the sci-fi of yesteryear. Quote-unquote from over fifteen years ago when it was first coined:

=================

Now, I would like to hear your definition of it, as you could say that I have a...kind of invested interest in it....
