Fallout: The Essence of Gameplay

Methidox

Still Mildly Glowing
wooty woot, i've been thinking of something theoritical to post about fallout, its been on my mind for a few days and now i'd like to get some opinions on it, feel free to flame the fuck out of me =) (that went smoothly didnt it? hehe)

Anywho

When you play fallout what is your character choice?
A: Strong Guy With the Big gun, blows threw shit, doing simple quests every now and then.
B:Strong Thief, sneaking around, doing all the quests you can, killing as much shit as you want, when you find it important to kill, or you just feel like killing something.
C: diplomatic guy, you carry a gun, but you dont really find it that usefull, you do all the quests, know the game in and out, your character is relatively weak, so you go around trying to avoid fights, but kicking plenty of ass when its time to kick ass

Also note: that i never use "company" characters in the fallout games... i like playing games where my character is alone and kickass, now, heres my preference so you can argue against it =)

I like being the strong theif, stealing ammo and stimpacks off of everything, when in battle, i fire, stimpack my health, save, end turn, repeat untill ass has been thourouly kicked.

Now, along with your favorite way of playing the game, i want you to tell me what you think about all these characters

Which is most common? Why is it common, what makes it common, shit like that. Also, i have this to say

Most games find the easy way to get through quests, etc...

1) Quest requires you to get something for someone, or do a task
2) You simply have to eliminate something for somebody, sometimes a part of a task in a quest

(Now, this is the basis of the discussion)

Now, as i see it, most games are based on the killing part, then kinda throw in some stuff to do other than killing. Now, i have to admit fallout is thee best game i have ever played, becuase you can do a lot of shit in a lot of different ways, but sadly... i have tried to go through the game without a gun (or my fist) and cannot seem to do so. maybe its just my impatience to do the game, but there are things, like the alien filled mines in Redding, that require you to kill some strong sons a bitches... there is no other way around this besides killing them yourself...

Also, i would like to see it where if you wanted to kill someone, you could walk into a bar, and say the target you want to kill is sitting at a table with some friends... so you go find the biggist ugliest son of a bitch in the bar, and say that the guy over there said some really bad shit about your mama, like "fill this space with really bad shit" and then the big bad ugly fucker would go do your job for you.

Things like this should be implemented more, for people who like to out-smart the game, i would be one of these people.

what do you think about this? Do you think fallout had enough of this to entertain a diplomatic thief, like me, and if youve seen it in other games, please give examples.

Or do you think most games lack the fighting side? would you like to see more badass weapons and 10 more ways for someone to die. (This also applies to thieves, who want 10 more ways to kill someone instantly, shit like that)

I would like to see some better uses of diplomacy, although not every quest should be solvable via speech. What I'd like to see is more quests that aren't available to every type of character.

For example, in Arcanum there's one quest where a revolutionary is holed up in a factory. He's started to feel kind of hopeless, and it looks like the situation with end in violence. However, with the proper stats, you can get the quest to go in and convince him to try another path. This is the "right" way to complete it, but many characters will never even have the option to take that quest because of the requirements.

Thats a good point

I'm working on an RPG myself (please dont make comments on this, i've already gotten enough elsewhere) and when i think of quest desighn, i usually make ways for all the character types to complete one quest, but in several different ways, for example

Boss gives you mission to "execute" a family

1) simply excute them, collect pay/experience/items
2) warn them, get involved in quests siding with the family to destroy the boss
3) learn why the boss wants them dead, solve the problem without anyone dying

now, since it is MY game, i am emphasizing the third choice, this way you get more gameplay, becuase now you get more quests from the boss, and you also get more quests from the family, and you learn more about the inner plot of the game (which you WOULD learn about anyway for the final quest for that boss, but it would not be as in-depth as it would be if you went the other route)
