Fallout to NV!

First time out of the vault
Sometime in 1997 i watched this tv programme about gaming and computers.
Every week they invited a gaming journalist to review games.
In this episode the guy talked about a game we know as Fallout.
It immediately got my interest, and like all members here, it's my favorite RPG to this date.
Remember this was a time when JRPGs set the mainstream standard.

Fallout 2 came as a surprise, the marketing was dreadful to say the least. It was a good game, but i prefer the first by a long shot.
It's interesting to point out that most ppl who did play it at release prefer the original, whereas the younger fans like the sequel better.

Tactics was an interesting idea. I'm a sucker for turn-based tactical RPGs! Although it seemed like lots of fans liked it, gamers never spoke about it at the INTERPLAY forums.
It was sort of a golden rule, never understood why.

Then they released Fallout:Brotherhood of steel!
I'll remember the discussions when it was in the development.
At this time IPLAYS lack of budget was a fact.
While the majority wanted IPLAY to focus on the 3rd installment, a minority thought that BOS was a smart move.
I actually bought the game, and yes, it's one of the worst games ever made!

When Beth bought the Fallout license, after speculations of Troika getting it, most fans including me, feared the worst.
I've never been a fan of the Elder Scolls franchise.
Not only does the series lack substance, but it's also ugly!
However i did play F3 six months after release.
Fallout 3 did get publicity, it did sell very well. Something BI didn't manage.
But it's not a game i enjoyed.
Fallout 3 simply isn't Fallout, the quests are tedious, and there is no real choices or consequences.
It seems to focus on maxing every stat and skill, much like the ES series.
Bethesdas games have a way of feeling very artificial.
Having a NPC repeatedly using the word "Fuck" doesn't make the dialogue interesting, mature nor Fallout.
Shame on you Beth!

NV on the other hand is the closest thing to Fallout 3.
Not only is the game great in every way, but whereas Fallout and 2 feels aged, NV has all the good elements, but still feels fresh.
Using Mark Morgans music was an interesting choice.
Especially the Glow and BOS themes.
The voice acting is incredible, it didn't get enough credit for this.
House's, King's and Old Ben's is top notch, i would say only Vampire:Bloodlines does a better in that respect.

I really would like to hear if any of you liked Fallout 3, and what you enjoyed about it.
Is there any old school gamer here who loves Fallout but despises NV?

Well I have to admit I did spent loads of hours on Fallout 3, I enjoyed the exploration and to some extent that it was Fallout. Played Fallout 1/2 and tactics thru so many times I kind wanted something new. I cant compare Fallout 3 with its predecessors but it was good fun for a while. Id even give it an 8/10 if it wasent a Fallout franchise game.

I love New Vegas even though im playing it on Xbox and I use quite a bit of vats, didint use vats at all in F3 as I played on PC. The only "bigger" problem I have with NV is the engine, I get these terrible Oblivion (why not F3 too) flashbacks sometimes while playing NV.

Ofcourse I would have loved to get a top down turn based Van Buren kinda game with upgraded graphics, though graphics isint that big of a deal for me. I still play the orginal fallouts at work. Getting payed to play Fallouts aint too bad.

Fallout:BoS I wouldnt call it the worst game ever, ok its got the same problem as Fallout 3 carrying the great F as a title, but it was good fun as co-op like Dark Alliance games mindless hack'n'slashing is sometimes great fun.

Sum it all up Fallout 3 and BoS are ok games if not a bit forgettable but as Fallouts they are sub par. Fallouts are bigger then life for me in a sense, Ive played them from age 12 or earlier and there is no other game franchise that im as passionate about.

Im at work now guess I should continue my female chatty sex bomb Fallout 2 playthrough.

I actually didnt mind Fallout 3 that much. When compared to the other games you get the fell that you are in the area that is the worst of the worst. It sending the message that humanity is just starting to come together instead of just survive in this barren wasteland. The dlcs were ok. The Pitt was a real good experience because it is rebuilding a city to its former way, an industrial center with all the gear it needs. It shows progress. Of course its nothing compared to the NCR now but being in the capital waste area its a real accomplishment. With all that said i think that the orginal 2 fallouts were the best. The first to be specific, but still number two was alright with its inclusion of the enclave which i felt was good.
