First time out of the vault
Sometime in 1997 i watched this tv programme about gaming and computers.
Every week they invited a gaming journalist to review games.
In this episode the guy talked about a game we know as Fallout.
It immediately got my interest, and like all members here, it's my favorite RPG to this date.
Remember this was a time when JRPGs set the mainstream standard.
Fallout 2 came as a surprise, the marketing was dreadful to say the least. It was a good game, but i prefer the first by a long shot.
It's interesting to point out that most ppl who did play it at release prefer the original, whereas the younger fans like the sequel better.
Tactics was an interesting idea. I'm a sucker for turn-based tactical RPGs! Although it seemed like lots of fans liked it, gamers never spoke about it at the INTERPLAY forums.
It was sort of a golden rule, never understood why.
Then they released Fallout:Brotherhood of steel!
I'll remember the discussions when it was in the development.
At this time IPLAYS lack of budget was a fact.
While the majority wanted IPLAY to focus on the 3rd installment, a minority thought that BOS was a smart move.
I actually bought the game, and yes, it's one of the worst games ever made!
When Beth bought the Fallout license, after speculations of Troika getting it, most fans including me, feared the worst.
I've never been a fan of the Elder Scolls franchise.
Not only does the series lack substance, but it's also ugly!
However i did play F3 six months after release.
Fallout 3 did get publicity, it did sell very well. Something BI didn't manage.
But it's not a game i enjoyed.
Fallout 3 simply isn't Fallout, the quests are tedious, and there is no real choices or consequences.
It seems to focus on maxing every stat and skill, much like the ES series.
Bethesdas games have a way of feeling very artificial.
Having a NPC repeatedly using the word "Fuck" doesn't make the dialogue interesting, mature nor Fallout.
Shame on you Beth!
NV on the other hand is the closest thing to Fallout 3.
Not only is the game great in every way, but whereas Fallout and 2 feels aged, NV has all the good elements, but still feels fresh.
Using Mark Morgans music was an interesting choice.
Especially the Glow and BOS themes.
The voice acting is incredible, it didn't get enough credit for this.
House's, King's and Old Ben's is top notch, i would say only Vampire:Bloodlines does a better in that respect.
I really would like to hear if any of you liked Fallout 3, and what you enjoyed about it.
Is there any old school gamer here who loves Fallout but despises NV?
