Fallout Trilogy Disk Reading Issues

Ned Wiki

First time out of the vault
Hello everyone. This is my first time visiting and posting on this site and I am hoping you can assist me with this issue. I recently got the Fallout Trilogy which is a PC DVD-ROM. And this is the unusual part, when I insert the disk into the drive the computer doesn't recognize that the disk is inside of it. It's quite frustrating because I love these games and I want to play them again. The computer's operating system is Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 System Pack 2. I can't figure out the issue and I tried to use the search function on this site but that didn't help resolve my problem. Please assist me if you can, thanks.

Is your DVD drive really old?
Had a problem like that a couple of years back.
It was a dual layer DVD and apparently my drive couldn't read those. Luckily DVD drives are pretty cheap.

In any case, try replacing the drive, if you have an extra one handy. Or just try it on a different computer.

The disk is brand new and the bottom looks perfect. The disk drive can read other CDs. And yes, I think the Disk Drive is pretty old. So I should buy a new Drive?

Well, maybe you should just try it on another computer first, just to be sure that it's not just a problem with the CD. Make up some excuse to visit a friend or parent with a newer PC. :P
If the CD works, you should probably go buy a new DVD drive.

Being an ass, I like to point out obvious things: Your CD ROM drive is a CD/DVD ROM combo drive, right? I ask only because you keep mentioning being able to run CDs.

Back in 2002 (assuming that's when you got the computer, not just the operating system version) DVD drives were still expensive as heck, and there wasn't that much use for them -- gaming wise.

Though, as mentioned above, if the disk is a Dual Layer, and you've got an old DVD drive (something in the range of 3 years old) and it doesn't have DVD-DL printed on the faceplate, it just won't work, or be seen. The same result of having a DVD in a CD ROM drive.

I miss 5 inch floppies. Life was so much simpler then.
