Fallout (v1.2) Crash Bugs in Junktown on OS X 10.3.8

Taintspore

First time out of the vault
I'm having some problems with Fallout (OS X version, latest version: v1.2). I'm in Junktown and am just about to help Killian run Gizmo out of town. Killian sent me to see Lars but when I'm on that map, I can't leave it (neither by leaving on my own nor through the conversation with Lars) because the game crashes. I also can't save the game because it crashes then too. I've got Ian and Dogmeat in my party if that helps at all. My system info is below. I've tried changing the screen res and colours to match the game (640x480, 256 colours) and that doesn't help either.

Machine Model: PowerBook G4 17"
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.1)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1.5 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.8.6f0

Graphics Card: ATI Radeon 9700 128 Meg
Operating System: 10.3.8

I've played FO1/2 many times on my windows machine but I wanted something to play between classes that was more interesting than Robot Rover. If any of the mac users around have had this problem and fixed it let me know.

Since I wasn't too far in I started a new game and went to junktown before doing anything else. Hasn't crashed once since then. Maybe my saves got corrupted or something. Anyway, I've got it fixed now.

Glad you got it working,

I know very little about the OSX release, but I do know that fallout (especially 2, but still applies to 1) does sometimes have a tendancy to corrupt certain parts of savegames.

The most notroious is the too many items bug in FO2, but there are others. What you described sounds very much on those lines, and yeah basically the only fix is to back up. That's why it's highly advisable to rotate save slots. I personally usually use 3 normal and 2 quicksave which I alternate using often enough that if I wind up with one that's no good anymore I can just step back slightly.

If you know the map names in the save games, you can also sometimes fix a save if you copy the one that's gone bad from an older save, and this way you don't lose anything except any changes between saves on the map itself that you copy. Handy if you've forgotten to save for a long time.

Thanks Wraith, I'll keep that in mind in the future. I usually rotate through them starting with 1 then 2 ... then 10 then back to one, but I have a bad habit of saving very often so it was happening even in my old saves.

Thanks again for the advice.

Yeah, that was what I meant about X number of normal saves and X quicksaves. I probably wasn't very clear.

The idea is you'd have say 2 - 5 qucksave slots, which you'd want to alternate but use often (before conversations, battles, whatever)

The "normal saves" you'd want 2 - 5 also, say they start at 1, which you' d use just as you enter say Junktown. Do NOT touch that again the whole time you're there. Use mostly quicksaves, perhaps going to normal save #2 once you pretty much clear one of the JT maps of items, quest stuff etc...

This way, even if all your quicksaves get hosed, you can just back up one map or one town worth and it's not a huge issue.

Cheers,

I'm having absolutely NO LUCK running Fallout 2.

I have a revision D PowerBook, running 10.3.8. I've tried the retail v. and both patched to 1.02a.. but:

I can punch and kick but if I try to use any sort of other weapon, the game immediately crashes when I attempt to attack something. Wonder if anyone else has had this problem.

Taintspore, your configuration is almost identical to mine. Have you tried to get Fallout 2 to work?

Nope. And I'm gonna admit off the bat I know next to nothing about macs.

However, were you on a PC, my first guess would be maybe something screwy in your sound files and or sound drivers?

That, or the projectile effects. Those are about the only things I can think of that ranged weapons but not melee would really have in common.

Sorry =(

Well, you were absolutely right about the sound... I disabled it and the game works fine. Can still listen to music... not ideal, but it'll do. I wonder what the problem is. I have little hope of MacPlay offering another patch. bah

You could try extracting the sound files and playing them. If your machine chokes on one, try to find a replacement for it and put it in the proper data\etc folder with a read only bit set.

Might fix it, though again, this coming from PC and not Mac experience.. so I am grasping a bit in the dark here.

If you can't extract them, you could also try the same as above by simply finding any sound file for fallout that corresponds to any ranged weapon and replace them in the above mentioned data\etc folders.

heh.. just tossing out anything I can think of lol :)

Sorry boneskull, haven't tried it yet. I've got it, but haven't started playing it yet on my mac. I'll give it a try later today when I get the chance and let you know. One thing that you can try (if you don't mind wiping your mac clean) is backing up your system, reinstalling OSX and reupdating. Something buggered up when I updated to 10.3.7 and I was having a crap load of problems with my sound. So I reinstalled OSX and reupdated and everything started working again. I really doubt this is the problem though. Haven't had my mac long enough to really know how OSX behaves when I break things in it.

Are you having the problem right at the beginning of the game? or is it further in? Give me a place and I'll check it out.

no particular spot.. as I said, disabling sound in fallout2.cfg seems to correct the problem, but maybe you can find another way...

I just checked FO2, tried punching and kicking, works fine, tried with a spear, works fine there too. If it was for a gun I didn't check that yet, my schedule is hell right now. If you've got a save you can email me just pm me and I'll give you my address (don't have as much time to play games as I thought it would seem). I didn't do anything fancy when I installed FO2, just loaded it and patched it. I've got everything updated as far as it'll go right now so beyond that I have no idea.

Like I said, if it's a problem with just guns, let me know and I'll give you my address, then you can mail me a save with guns and I'll check it out again for you.

Sorry i couldn't be more help.
