Fallout2 crashes when I end combat

I am playing a 1slot game, and I stupidly saved in mid combat after I had injected the mutagenic serum into a mutant then killing it normally.

Whenever I end combat, the game tries to apply the serum affect to a now dead critter and the game crashes

Is there anyway of getting around this? the save game is after I injected the serum and killed it, so I cannot stop it within the game now.

I am also using the 1.05 patch with update 1.

Well, you could try not to kill the mutant when you go into combat, and just run from him until combat ends, then the serum will take effect, killing him... if that doesn't work... You're screwed.
...Start over, or from a different save slot.
