Faster computer, problems?

First time out of the vault
Crazy fast map moving.

Ok guys so I just installed Fallout 2 onto XP and i did do a little character editing (like added 1 to S, I, A, etc.) but nothing else. I get out of Arroyo only to find i move obsurdly fast and without conflict around the map. I ran down to San Fransisco in about 2 seconds without a single encounter. I installed the offical patch before playing, so im baffled as to what it was that caused this. Any ideas?

Maybe you accidently installed the hoverplates?

If you have the car, try walking around instead.
If you don't, check the overhead map wether you see a little car thingy on the right of the screen.

Pace on the world map is controlled by the terrain you are on. Flat land faster than mountains etc. Maybe you have a high outdoorsman skill, or have selected one of the perks that makes your char go round the world map quicker. Maybe your mouse sensitivity is at it's highest and it suggests higher speed. Maybe your character is just running and you haven't played the game for a long time!

You could re-install it, I suppose and see what good you get out of it.

I'm playing Fallout 2 on my new 2.2 ghz computer now, and its great with the load times.

The problem is, that in the world map, the movement goes by at light speed. The time it takes to get somewhere isn't so much the problem, as it is the severely reduced occurence of Random Encounters.

Does anybody know how I could fix this?

My guess is that its like you said, RANDOM. They occur randomly, and you have got shafted by lady luck

Uness the law of averages just flew out the window, I shouldn't be able to go between klamath and The Den 5 times before the hard-coded encounter with Horrigan.

The passage of game time and distance should be constant regardless of processor speed. I can't see how they would affect random encounters. As your Outdoors skill increases, you will have less of a probability of RE's. Also traveling by car reduces that too.

I'm aware that the game time should be consistant. That's the problem.

Walking goes through days in 2 seconds. Its crazy.

I feel your pain buddy!!!!! some of you veterans of these boards might remmber me by the name of jamesduck where i had this exact same problem but i started playing it on my old computer so that works for me.

I have the same problem that movement goes by really fast, but I get the random encounters the way they are supposed to happen.

I run a 2.4 ghz system. Maybe this problem can be included in the next patch?

My mate has the same problem, new pc, fast and shit, fly through the world map at 400,000mph. Is there actually a solution, or could the residant experts make a mega patch

Geez, unlucky you. I'm still operating a 833 Celeron, so your problem is of no concern to me ;)

Faster calculations would mean that game time would pass faster. All in all, it is a matter of whether RE are checked for basing on the distance passed on the map (meaning that there's a chance of a RE whenever you move) or if they are checked for periodically every x miliseconds of real time. If the latter was the case, playing on a faster computer would indeed lower the chance of getting a RE during the journey from point A to point B (because more game time would pass in 1 milisec of real time). If they were to be checked basing on your covering of a given distance, this would not happen, however.

I believe that RE's aren't being checked for on a timer-event base, as I have not experienced a tangible decrease in RE frequency upon switching to my 833 Mhz machine from a 200 MHz, but I could be wrong.

Doesn't the Outdoorsman skill affect only the ability to 'detect' an RE, giving you the choice to enter or avoid it? Unless you mean "special encounters" , in which case the probability of their occurence *increases* with the development of your Outdoorsman skill.

Had this kinda problemo, but wasn't such a pain in the ass ;) Walkin' is as fast as car, and a car would be faster than vertibird :D

I think the "game difficulty" setting affects the rate of encounters, so make sure it's on Hard.

Also, the Horrigan encounter occurs on or after a specific date, I think it's August 30 2241.

hope that helps..

The same problem. My 2,4 goes as fast as shit. On normal level I've had 4 random encounters in the game. I remember that on my 133 5 years ago I had all the special encounters before reaching Redding...

I've just upgraded, and it's the same for me. Map movement is far, far too fast. The only way I've managed to get attacked so far is to keep clicking locations without stopping at any of them. I know I could try a slowing utility, but the load times are finally decent. Only patches installed are the official one and the add children one.

Welcome to modern technology. There really is no fix for this, other than playing it on an older computer. Pentium1 or 2 with windows 95/98. Some people have had success using a cpu slowdown utility, but when I try them it makes my PC unstable.

I have the same problem but I don't really mind because I still get enough encounters (I am patient). That might just be me though.
