Over at Gamepro, ole Feargie talks about Neverwinter Nights 2, and answers a question or two regarding Fallout 3, including his thoughts on Bethesda being able to pull it off.
GP: Changing the subject, since you headed both Fallout 1 and 2, do you have any thoughts on Bethesda taking on Fallout 3?

FU: I'm cool with it. I mean that's why I didn't want to leave Black Isle for so long because I wanted to make the next Fallout, and knew if I left that I couldn't make Fallout. It's one of those things that I want to wish them the best of luck--Fallout fans are the worst fans there are. I'd still like to make another Fallout, but something that worries me is whether or not making another Fallout makes sense. It was cool and a lot of fun seven years ago, but is it pertinent anymore?
Check out the full interview at Game Pro.
Ouch. Where's the love, Feargie?
Thanks to Funky Zealot for the heads up.

This newspost inspired me to a new slogan: "Fuck you, Feargie"

I'm sure that would make a nice T-shirt.

For some reason, Feargie has a hard on for FO fans.

Brutal honesty must be offensive to him.

Pertinent? Pertinent to what? Obsidian's cash flow, because Bioware doesn't own the game and can't farm it out to them? And it made sense seven years ago? So did Final Fantasy like menu based console RPG's and Diablo style point-and-click combat, yet here we are with KOTOR and NWN bravely carrying on the near burnt out torch of those games. What a goof. I think at this point he's just trying to see how many flames he can generate when people ask him about Fallout.

There are three tenets to have a successful business in retail. I think they apply rather well to game making also: 1. Customer Service; 2. Respect for the Individual; 3. Strive for Excellence. What is customer service? In a nutshell, it is a desire to give the customer what they want and make sure they are happy with it. As for 'Respect for the Individual,' that is simply treating someone with respect and caring about what they think, whether they are a customer or an associate. 'Strive for Excellence' is trying to offer the best product and best service possible. What is so hard to understand about this for these game developers? The most successful retailer in the world came up with these three tenets and it works. Sure we are demanding fans, but what customer isn't? Do you ever settle for poor service or quality anywhere else when you purchase something? When you know what a company is capable of, it is hard to take when they lower their standards for no apparent reason beyond greed. Hopefully Bethesda realizes the potential of what they have and brings back the quality of game that any fan deserves.

Well, i'll go with montez on this one, it's starting to look like he's just trying to piss us off.

I'd still like to make another Fallout, but something that worries me is whether or not making another Fallout makes sense.

A typical producer's answer. Like he's saying: "I'd still like to make Fallout, but at the casual game market that we have today, I don't know will it make me much money! Console gamers sure wouldn't appreciate a turn-based game, so I wouldn't have a chance to snatch some cash."

That's the problem with producers - unlike designers, they reach for the cash, not the title of a truly gaming masterpiece.

Who cares about Fergies statements ? Remember his statement about Torn or Lionheart ?

Besides, there's an agenda behind the statements..

That’s mostly the publishers’ fault not the developers. It has nothing to do with game development, in most cases the games aren’t being made for the customers but for the publishers funding them.

Game developers just make what the publishers tell them to. So you can’t blame the developers for not making what people want because they mostly have no control over that. Publishers make the ideas and concept; designers just fill in the blanks.

However if a game has shitty controls or story then that’s the developers’ fault.

This is why in the development stage games which are seen by the publisher as a B game can often make more money than A games.

Just look at all the great B games: Fallout, System Shock 2, The Sims, etc.

Did he get gang-raped in an alley by Fallout fans or something?

I appreciate Feargus' honesty, and barring some past things, he's an okay guy, but this is beginning to sound like either a personal agenda or just plain idiocy.

I would imagine he's trying to marginalize FO3 because:

1) He can't be involved in any way, shape or form in it's design or completion.

2) It's taking too much attention away from his "Bioware Junior" games.

"the worst fans there are." <- I still can't determine whether it's a compliment or not.

As I've said earlier; we're passionate, but that's really a good thing (right?).

I agree, though I can't quite figure out what exactly. Insulting us is no big deal cause no one cares really, but the past two interviews it really seems like he's trying to undercut Bethesda for some reason. Granted the two companies probably aren't going to collaborate ever, but why keep making hints that they made a bad choice in getting FO3? It doesn't make sense to say anything negative about other gaming companies, it just doesn't seem like good business.

Then again, he could be just talking without thinking it through I guess.

Yeah, like Ferg has never done that.
