USAToday said:
WASHINGTON — Counterterrorism officials are looking into the possibility of postponing the November presidential election if there is a terrorist attack at election time, Newsweek reported Sunday.

Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge warned last week that Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network may attack within the USA to try to disrupt the election.

The magazine cited unnamed sources who said the Department of Homeland Security asked the Justice Department for advice last week.

Newsweek said DeForest Soaries, chairman of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, wants Ridge to ask Congress to pass legislation giving the government power to cancel or reschedule a federal election. Soaries said New York suspended primary elections on the day of the Sept. 11 attacks, but the federal government does not appear to have that authority.

The disclosure comes only a few days after U.S. authorities said they believe that al-Qaeda is planning a "large-scale" attack in the USA aimed at disrupting the presidential campaign and November elections.

Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said Thursday that the party conventions were among the possible targets of such an attack, although he said there had been no particular threat to either convention. Democrats meet in Boston later this month; the Republican convention begins in late August in New York City.

Ridge said the intelligence was gathered from "credible" sources, but he acknowledged that it did not yield any specific information about a possible attack.

U.S. officials have been particularly concerned about an attack during the presidential campaign since the Madrid railway bombings in March. The bombings, which killed nearly 200 people, occurred on the eve of national elections. Spain's ruling party was ousted.

Um?

Ridge says that terrorists might try to disrupt the election, so we should postpone it. Doesn't that just accomplish the goals of the terrorists anyways?

No. And that's not what he's saying. He's saying that in the event of a terrorist attack, an election could be postponed.

There aren't any really good reasons to try to postpone those elections in such an event, though.

Did you forgot what happened in Madri? See. That's why Bush's gang is worried about it. According to the last pool Kerry is in the lead but Bush is close.

God...i dont personally like ol' gw, but i shudder to think what would become of america if a liberal POS like kerry gets elected.

I don't think even terrorists could be that stupid, and anyway they'd have nothing to gain by disrupting the election. We're talking about people whose only means of doing anything to us is by hijacking planes - anyone who gives creedence to the thought that they have the resources to affect this country in any significant way is out of their mind. What, someone's going to sneak a shoe bomb into the local high school and ruin democracy? The only thing more pathetic than preparing national defense plans over something like this is the "Intelligence" part of the C.I.A.

The only person who has something to gain by postponing the election is George Bush anyway. I don't want to imagine what our country is going to turn into if he gets reelected due to something like that, winning both terms in office due to blatant cheating with no reprecussions.

The worst part about election day is how uncomfortable that tube in your rectum feels. And do they they really have to stick it in there right in public? Come on.

Haha, that would be a great way for Bush to win - mandatory body cavity searches at all voting centers. Only the hard-core christians and republicans would show up and he'd win in a landslide. I almost wish it would happen, at least I'd be able to admire him for his creativity.

Oi, I think if the terrorists were to launch an attack around the election, Bush would win- the rally around the flag effect.

But it also sounds a bit suspicious- "Hey we're losing in the polls, maybe we need to jack up the alert status a bit and freak everyone out."

I think Bush and Co will say "The election will be postponed indefinitely". Sounds sorta like... president for life... or DICTATOR

Besides, I'd rather see someone in power who will actually help this country. Bush sent many people to their death, and he lost a lot of jobs. Kerry's cabinet might be able to help us out.

The Bleak Future is here. Welcome to the 21st century. I don't like where the world is going.

Don't know about you, but I'll be stockpiling on canned food and ammunition to get ready for America after November.

So, basically, what Bush is doing here is leaving the door wide open for him to be Emperor, a la Star Wars. Time to start forming the Rebellion....

You can buy unregistered 80% Colt 1911 receiver for $200 without going through a firearms dealer or a background check.

Machine gun receivers are even more common.

Better start buying them now before Bush outlaws all firearms.

The alert status is a joke. It parallels the story of the boy who cried wolf. It's gone up and down and up and down with ambiguous warnings that resulted in no real effects. The point is being reached where people don't really pay attention to it anymore.

You know that these people are a bunch of tight asses. So this search is really going to be a pain in the ass for them. On the other hand, some democrats are gayfully willing to do this sacrifice in the name of democracy.
