Feedback On My BoS Fallout Lore Video

AngryConfusedRabbit

First time out of the vault
About five months ago I posted two Fallout Lore vids, which did pretty well, even though they weren't the best. After that I went on a long hiatus and just got back into making Youtube videos recently. I decided to start up the Fallout Lore series again, starting with the Brotherhood of Steel. The video only centers around the "Lost Hills" Brotherhood of Steel. There will be one more video on the BoS talking about the different divisions ( or chapters ) of the BoS, stuff on the NCR War, aswell as talking more about their ideology/ranks.

I'd appreciate if you guys can give me some feedback/suggestions/incredibly positive compliments on the video, as I will be doing this weekly and will put a good amount of work into it.

Fallout Lore: Episode 2 - The Brotherhood of Steel (Lost Hills) ---> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBhqA_e41k4

It would be hard for me to give an awesomly incredible review about anything, but i find you're on a good path.

However, you must be aware that there is already some competition on that field.

Notably, there is a collection of video that seem to have the exact same name (Fallout Lore) and a better visibility.

Here a link : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvqm_pPD-aQ

Compared to them, i must say that you provide more complete and better information.
Those vids were very disapointing, considering that 75% of their content were questions or random stuff, and 25% were barelly scratch informations.(and were too focused in Focr3p)

Here, considering that you intend to do another video about their other groups, i don't see much missing information about BOS history.
I would probably mention that the BOS also declined because of their many wars agains't the unity, and their refusal to recruit.

On an other hand, there isn't much mention of the Brotherhood of Steel culture (Gathering and keeping technology, following the codex, not recruiting, being isolated etc...)
Those factors are quite important.

On a more subjective point of view, i think that the names of games (Fallout 1, Fallout 2, Wasteland) shouldn't be mentionned, as when you see the video your immersed in the fictionnal universe. Mensionning names of products could break that immersion.
But that remains very subjective, as i don't know your angle to deal with these vids.

On a side note, it could have been interesting to have very basic informations about the NCR. Not really describe them, but mention the minimum intel, but if someone that doesn't know anything about the fallout universe happen to see your video, he wouldn't be lost.
I don't think Unity/Vipers need more informations. The vid is not about them and you provide enough to understant the situation.

Your voice or the one that you chose is pretty effective. Not much mistakes or hesitations, not much accent, a correct rythm.
This is far better that most videos that you find on the internet. But, on the other hand, you face a competitor (link above) that use probably a professionnal voice. Seems hard to compete right know, but if you make many videos and intend to increase the number of views, a professionnal voice is an option that could be considered.

Other that the voice, the choice and the order of sentences is not always perfect.

Sometimes, there is a little confusion on who's you are talking about.
For instance, you talk about the brotherhood moving from Mariposa to the Lost Hills bunker, and the same time, you deal with Allen's crew. Then you say "They finnally arrived" just after talking about Allen/The Glow.
So, for a few seconds, we are confused about who arrived when. The confusion last only a few seconds from an hard fallout fan, but it's make uneasy, and make yourself pointing a mistake, instead of fully appreciate the content. If The video is your first entry in the Fallout Universe, that kind of things could make you lost.
I used the Allen Example, but it is not the only time this happens. IMO you should focus on one subject at the time. If you mix things, you make produce that kind of mistake.

Visually, i don't see much video effect, and that's not a big issue, but i see many nice pictures effects that greatly enhance the visual quality of the video.
The green screen on the background is not my taste but it serve it's purpose, as all pictures have not the same proportions.

I am not fan of seing Maxson Talking. Seems out of the place. I would rather see his photos, the text and hear his voice.
It would allow a bigger picture of him. Plus, it is the only guy we see talking and it doesn't render great.
Also they is a lot of unecessary things on the screen when he talks.

A very minor addition could be some shadows or borders on your text, so they would be seen better, and feel more pro.

Otherwise, it seems promising.
I am very curious to see what you will provide next.
(and the first episode, if you have a link)

Thanks for the feedback, you really made some great points! I planned to talk more about the BoS culture/ideology and everything in the next video, since it differs between each division/chapter, so I wanted to wait and do it all at once so I can easily compare the different cultures in different BoS divisions. On naming Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 in the video, I can see what you mean with that. I don't 100% know my angle as of right now either, I'm putting alot of thought on how I want to present the lore in future vids.

I can understand while you weren't a fan of seeing Maxson talk, and in the future I might do what you said and just include the characters picture with their voice and the text of what they are saying on screen, but I will probably be using even more videos in future vids to showcase stuff. Maybe I fade the videos in just right, put some old timey effects to it, or put on some old timey show tune music when playing the video or something, whatever I do, I'll make sure it doesn't seem out of place. One thing I know is, I don't want the whole video to be pictures, thats what the Shoddycast is great at with their custom pics (They do use video at times, but its mostly pictures). I used alot of pics in this vid mostly due to a good majority of the stuff I talked about in the vid happened before Fallout 1, and then Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 in-game gameplay isn't the best looking.

I already improved the look of the text for next time, and it really does add the feeling that the video is higher quality.
I'll also work on my voice for the next vids, making sure its not as monotone and keeping it at a good pitch. I might not match up to the Shoddycast's narrator, but I'm pretty sure in the end I don't need to. There is alot of stuff I plan to improve and add in the next video, so I hope you can give me some feedback then. And you can find Episode 1 in the link below. It's from 5 months ago and has minor problems with it, so no need to give any feedback on it. Thanks again for the feedback! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dceUsgT5GXk

Seen the ghoul video.
It's great too. Those video are very well integrated in the flow.
There are some Fo1-Fo2 that lost their proportions. This was corrected in the BOS video, in which you kept the ratio and covered the borders with the green screen.

There is also some moment with the ghoul lady in which the sound is to high.

About the informations themselves, they seem pretty clear, well detailed and with an efficient tone.

Now that all is done i think one valuable addition would have been that, as they're immune to radiation, ghoul represent a precious working force in highly radiated areas like the Gecko Energy station, or Broken Hills uranium mines, but this addition is quite minor compared to what is already said. (plus, the same could be said about super-mutants)

To complete what have been said about the BOS video :

The Maxson seems out of place for a few reasons. I believe it is one of the rare moments we switch in integrated videos.
Also, the Fo1 ingame screen in smaller that your youtube video screen. Then, Maxson face is smaller that the Fo1 ingame screen.
So in the end, Maxson face is not only very small, but is surrounded by things that are not quite relevant for the videos, notably the ingame text in the bottom and the green border all around. I think it runs better in the ghoul video.

About the voice, i don't say it's bad. It's pretty good actually. So is the tone, the rythm, the recording quality or the choice of words.
Seems most of the work is done, and to improve it, it would be a lot of work for small improvements. The choice of a professionnal voice could be made if you want to compete with the other guy and have a better internet audience. But it is not an obligation. You still could have views and be appreciated otherwise. Also, it would cost money. Many depending of which actor. To sum it up, i talked about it, to cover as many aspects as i could, the thing is, this voice is far more good than bad (or even correct).

On a side note, do you keep text about what you say on the video ?
(I absolutly not promise anything, but maybe some people would be interested in making subtitles in their own langage)
