And I guess that's why games like FO is not made anymore.

Sigh....:(

And Max Payne won over Civ III?

This is the reader's poll, it tells you what the market is thinking and where it's going. I think RPGers like us should really band together to create more market share and push for a change in the system.

[font size=1" color="#FF0000]LAST EDITED ON Jan-14-02 AT 11:23AM (GMT)[p]Gather a group of 12-15 year olds in a room. Show them a 'really cool looking' 3d 1st person shoot-em-up computer game. Then show them an in-depth dark, mysterious RPG. Ask them which one they'll buy. The answer:

- That 3d ONE!
- Yeah, that looked cool!

Now, gather a group of 20+ year olds. People with a bit more brains. Show them a 'really cool looking' 3d 1st person shoot-em-up computer game. Then show them an in-depth dark, mysterious RPG. Ask them which one they'll buy. The answer:

- The 3d one looked nice.... But... I've already got plenty of 3d shoot-em-ups. I don't need another one.
- That RPG has a fair bit of depth in it. I haven't seens something like that for a good while...

The results of surveys all depend on the people you ask. Ask 100 Republicans who they'll vote for, They'll say Mr 'I can't handle my pretzels'. Ask 100 Democrats who they'll vote for. They'll say Gore. Ask 100 Environmentalists.. They'll say some hippie dude from the 60's....

I think those polls just go to show that more kiddies get asked about which games they like, as opposed to older people (older people who are more likely to consider a purchase, rather than buy it on its graphics).

Of course, the problem is.... Guess which group of people the game creators listen too....

It has nothing to do with age; just taste. I've always like rpgs no matter my age.

Well, Civ3 does suck(Call to Power is much better), and Max Payne is the best looking shooter ever, so it does figure.

Well, I guess that answers my question. :D

bleh.. im 15 and the only games i own are rpg's cept quakeI and half-life

Okay, so maybe my age limitations were over generalised.... Sorry. Although, it seems that most of the people on this board are the exceptions to the rule. Well... Except Ergil.

Well

I didn't say I like Max Payne better than Civ 3, I dislike them both. All I said is that I can understand why some pepole like Max Payne better.

i have a better idea
gather a group of people like you, who classify people by ages, and saw thier legs off :P

Age has nothing to do with it, i can say this because im 16, and i play commodore 64 games, and i damn well enjoy it

its all about what you get used to
people who started playing video games in the past say, 5 to 7 years, would have high expectations for graphics and base a game's quality on it
Those of us who grew up with things like a commodore, or a NES, or even worse, base a games quality on its gameplay
Age is good for a vague idea but you piss people off
even more so when you're talking about immature acts, ive met more people alot older than me that are the type to have a n00b mentality, or generally be a lamer, than i have people my age or younger
just my rant

RE: Well

Ahem, Max Payne is a fun game, but its not that good... Civ3 isnt that good either, but given a choice between another civ game, or another FPS with (shock) about 1% origionality, id choose the FPS, because;
A)Sid Meier's Alpah Centauri was the best Civ game ever released, as it has more features and replayability than Call To Power or Civ 3, so I dont need them.
B)shooting people in "t3h F4c3!" is fun.

Dont get me wrong, I love RPGs, CRPGs and "in-depth" games, but they need to atleast try to compete on the same level as the FPS games and get some shiny new graphics ect. The technology is there, why not use it?...

Actually, having said all that, I spent 6 hours last night playing Ultima Underworld in glorious 320X240 256 colours after unistalling Quake3 because I was bored of it... hmmm :\

RE: Well

in my opinion Q1 is the best of the three. I still occasionally play single player. wow a FPS with replayability :) it was also one of the first, if not the first FPS to release its source code so that it could be publicly modded. I still play Q1 CUSTOM (the prozac mod) team fortress (best game in the world you should all try it) =] but anyways, hurray for Q1! ;)

RE: Well

Its surprising how much fun Q1 is really... Do you have the 3Dfx Glide patch or similar to make it look super-spiffy in 16 million colours ect? Doom is also great for playing single player, there is a 3Dfx patch for that too, but I havent been able to get it to run at an acceptable speed yet :(

If you want a really good mod, try action quake/quake2/half-life for a blast, its liek max payne in style and is jolly good fun.... http://ahl.telefragged.com/ if your interested in action HL.....

RE: Well

Civ two suits me just fine. If my CD goes out i've always got civ 2 to play. it is cheap small and fun. What i look for in a game is replay value. RPG's replay values are through the roof. FPS are nice but once you beat it there is nothing else to do. there are exceptions to everything the legand of zeld ocerina of time was the worst RPG ever, if you even call that an RPG. Grand theft auto 3 is on of the sweatest FPS i've ever played. It has a very in depth unlike haylo which is just a bitchen game. The graphics are awsome and the level are huge. many people do not like just one type of game. My friend has nothing but sports games for PS2 but also plays FO on the side.

RE: Well

zelda games arent really RPG style because your forced to play your character a certain way, which is incredibly borring.

but zeldaII for the nes on the other hand =]

RE: Well

I actually like Zelda.
I'm currently playing ocarina of time on the n64, and even tought it's somewhat restraining and linear it still lets you do pretty much what you wants(besides killing everyone, and looting and becoming a slaver, and telling Ganodorf where zelda went).

But it's no true RPG.

RE: Well

I always considered it action/adventure, and from that perspective it has quite a bit of depth.
