File type detection?

Whenever I check the properties of a file I get a general "Winamp/Windows media file" instead of a proper file type description. This is very noob-ish, but I suck at computers. Is there a way to find out exactly what type of file it is?

Open explorer. Go to Functions>Preferences>Show Tab, then uncheck "Hide file type name for know files".

Something to that extent, I have a danish version :p

If you're saying you're getting the WRONG file type you need to get something called "TweakUI" for your operating system (they differ) and use the repair fucntion to repair file types. TweakUI is a Microsoft extension that just enables hidden interfaces to control certain stuff. It's really a generally useful program anyway.

I don't think it's the "wrong" file type, it's just not specified in greater detail than "Winamp media file". I'd like to know if it's an mp3 or a wav file, for instance.

*edit*

oh, nevermind, I figured it out. Thanks nova.

the way to change that also differs between XP home & XP pro, so next time, mention OS ;)

Yeah, hand it to Microsoft to make it so that the file properties doesn't show the extension unless you make it so that the file extensions show as part of the name in the folder view.

Kind of makes you wonder what those idiots at Redmond really are doing. Crack doesn't begin to explain this shit.

Why would a normal computer user EVER POSSIBLY have to worry about file extensions?

All you need to know is what Windows thinks the file represents.

Do not question Redmond. Buy more software.
