Finished FO: Tactics Solo on Tough Guy Mode n Tips to do it

First time out of the vault
Hi all,

I started playing FO:T again a while back and just finished it on "Tough Guy" mode with 1 character. My previous game, my main char was melee in a squad and wasn't as effective. I got as far as Scott City on that game, but someone kept dying from the Behemoths so I gave up on that game.

Here's what I used to get through the game solo. At first, I tried to get through it without dying or reloading ever, but that lasted till Mission 9 in St. Louis where I died 2 times. The part where you storm the stronghold with the Super-mutants with Brownings and mines all up the hill resulted in me stepping on a mine for 1 death, and getting torn up by a browning for another.

Other than that, after you get power armor after mission 14, the game is a lot easier since not many things can really kill you in one shot unless you are really unlucky.

My char stats:
ST 8
PE 10
EN 4
CH 2
IN 10
AG 10
LK 3

I played using turn based so high AG was critical. I also wanted 12AP to get 4 burst shots out as well as 6 shots from the pulse rifle or 2 rocket launcher shots or 3 grenade tosses. 12 AP is very useful overall. STR at 8 since Adv power armor gives +4. Could live with 4 EN and love getting more skill points so I gave myself 10 IN. Didn't care for CH or LK.

Traits:
Gifted
Fast Shot

Tags:
Throwing
Sneak
Big Guns

Throwing is pretty critical I felt. It's the easiest way to engage super mutants without being seen by them early in the game and with 1 char against a few at a time, you need to pick your fights since you can't stand up to a single browning or rocket launcher shot.

Perks:
3) Comprehension
6) Loner
9) Lifegiver
12) Lifegiver
15) Bonus Rate of Fire
18) Action Boy 1
21) Tag Energy Weapons
24) Action Boy 2
27) <didn't bother since I was near the end> already

I decided not to tag small guns because there are the Guns and Ammo mags to raise that skill. I also thought about tagging Doctor too, but since you don't really need that skill much higher than 100, I thought it was better to save it for skills where you need percentages much higher (like combat skills). In the end, you can get by with the secondary skills like lock pick, pilot, repair, science at around 100 and you should be set. Loner helps a lot here since you get +10% across all your skills. No downside since you're solo anyways.

The early levels were harder since I had to rely on small guns without putting any skill points in it, but the hunting rifle goes a long way there in terms of range.

My first skill to boost was doctor since once you got crippled or blinded, it was game over and initially, I was trying to finish the game without dying or ever reloading.

Some key tips from my game:
- I started every mission at 8pm or later. That makes it so the enemies miss a lot more. This used more ammo early on without small guns, but with high IN and the comprehension perk, each Guns and Ammo book raised your small guns by 22 till 100+.

- Used grenades. I found grenades to be the only way to really take out super mutants carrying brownings and rocket launchers early on.

- Get doctor skills up fast. If you had only one life, you can't afford to get crippled or blinded in a mission.

- On behemoths. Engage them as far away as you can. With Adv power armor, it's probably the only thing that can kill you in one shot. EMP grenades will take one out in 3 shots.

- Gotta use energy weapons. In my previous game, my main char was a melee char and everyone else in that squad was small or big guns. Both small and big guns (unless EMP shells) just doesn't do enough damage to robots. You avg < 10 and use up way too much ammo. With the pulse rifle, you're doing 35-50 I've noticed.

- Best weapons. My final weapons were the Pulse Rifle and Gatling Gause. The Gause can do 1400 avg. damage and hits robots noticably harder than the Browning. The 2mm EC ammo is rare early on, but near the end, I had about 1400 rounds on me. Prior to that, I used the Browning M2 which owns super mutants or anything not a robot.

I think I'm going to try to solo it again with a HtH/Melee character, but doubt it can make it through assuming I try to do all the side quests. It may work if I used a lot of drugs in the mission. That and I'll try to find all the special encounters now.

Let me know if anyone has questions on any of the missions when using 1 character and hope some of you find these tips helpful in your game.

You aren't supposed to attack the stronghold, in fact you are specifically ordered not to. There really should of been some penalty there for not following orders.

That's what the books are for.
