Fire Geckos?

Fire Geckos are found in and around sulfur deposits, and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is extremely flammable and indeed explosive gas that is much heavier than air so could be theoretically stored in a sac of some kind in the gecko. They could either produce it themselves as a byproduct of sulfur consumption or simply collect it from where it accumulates in mines and the like.

Some reptiles (though not actual geckos) have gizzards where they swallow small stones in order to aid in digestion. Theoretically if a Fire Gecko were to have a gizzard, which contained both quartz and pyrite those stones rubbing against each other could create sparks sufficient to ignite the hydrogen sulfide.

Well, it's a way better explanation than "FEV turned fire ants into fire-breathing ants".

Doctor Lesko clearly came to the Mojave, found another annoying kid, sent him off to go get murdered and started messing around with Gecko DNA to "Make them smaller" and ended up accidently making them firebreathing.

And this is why, IMHO, Fallout needs books and pamphlets like the Elder Scrolls games. It's a much better way to tell lore than simply going "I dunno."
