First Aussie Death In Iraq

Duckman

...Apparently caused by his own gun, being shot at his head...

However sinister and dark this may be, it does appear to be strange that in many recent conflicts, the only reason there has been Aussie fatalities is due to other Aussie soldiers. (East Timor is mentioned in this article somewhere)

But this news article is certainly creating a lot of controversy here, as originally, it was believed he shot himself whilst cleaning his gun, even though he was a trained marksman.

It would be good to hear your thoughts.

This is interesting stuff. While it's entirely possible he did shoot himself, as accidents do happen, and with guns those accidents can be sudden and lethal, it's also obvious that the evidence is against this, as he was trained and skilled with weapons. The entire situation reeks of the controversy the British army has been through for a while, where "suicides" and "accidents" are swept under the rug.

Either way, it's a damn shame.

have u guys seen the Manjurian Governer? the one that Denzel Washington was in? just a point of view~
Manchurian Candidate, and the old one was much, much better.

Also, he may have been trained with a gun, but hell, so was that idiot cop who shot himself in the foot.

Yeah. Like I said, accidents happen. But when you put together his training and, more importantly, the constantly changing and differing accounts of what actually happened, it paints a pretty suspicious picture.

I hope this gets sorted out and no evidence of foul play is found. I plan to join the army and I reckon I'll have enough trouble not getting shot by the enemy, let alone some dickhead on my side.

you give counterstrike a bad name...

and yeah, i think it's suicide. you cant just box up your boy & ship him home saying that. so you say it's a cleaning accident. as if that makes it better.

Sick, but accurate, way of determining if it was a suicide or a cleaning, as passed down by a mortician. If it's a direct shot (wound shape and powder burn would be an immediate giveaway) from any directionality but the face, suicide. If there's powder burns on the face (for example, how one Airman took themselves out, Glock 9 to the eye), then it's most likely a suicide, as at that point anyone could see the loaded bullet by unloading the chamber- part of the cleaning ritual and about the only way you can see down the barrel.

And the #1 most tasteless way to know it was a suicide involving a gun:

If the teeth are intact but they ate the bullet.

Hmm, it sure is creating a lot of differing views, but I really can't see how he died. Sometimes they (the media) say its suicide, others say its something else...

I don't know what to believe, but whatever the case, it is getting messier by the day.

lol~ dont get mad~ but... just a joke~

I found it mildly humorous. Actually, I guffawed.

I think that something more is going on here. It could be suicide, but I don't think that he could have been that careless/clumsy. I will be keeping an eye on this.

It's a war. Shit happens. Move on.

Another Great Malky Moment.

The great thing about this story is that there were two people in there with him, and both conveniently didn't hear or see anything. Interesting, wot?

Just sayin'. How many US and Iraqi casualties, and Australia is pissed because they lost one dude? I mean I understand that the manner of death is kind of suspect, but seriously, that kind of shit happens all the time.

Clearly, somebody stole his Prosthetic Ass and murdered him in the process.

The first for a country is always significant. And it's the circumstances sorrounding the death that make it so interesting.

A man who's grown up around rifles all his life accidently shoots himself while he's cleaning. Two people are in the room with him and they don't hear or see anything. The military changes it's story about what happens to him multiple times.

Welcome to bureaucracy.
