So far, not bad at all.
(As a note, I have played about 9 hours, created a few PCs till I figured out how the system works, (For example, if you give a female name, you better make a female character, as your not going to change it later) and then started to explore the wasteland. Did the southern circle route and in Freetown, but have not done anything in Freetown except play some cards.
Keeping this mostly spoiler free, as I am playing it spoiler free.
Playing a Sneaky gun type that I am building up science and speech. Good terms with most of the towns in the south, and the NCR, hated by the some gangs and the legion.
Pros
- NPCs have a ton of character, which was lacking in 3. The drunken caravan woman at the southern gate has more character then half the NPCs of 3 combined.
-Logical setting for 200 years after the bombs fell, with independent settlements being absorbed into growing political bodies. Also, your not eating 200 year old food.
- I enjoy the gun system, with weapon mods and varied ammo types.
-end of the world Western fits the fallout meme for the area, and so far is well done.
- Some of the quests are a ton of fun, the launching of the Ghouls into space, the shootout in the starting town come to mind as fun.
-combat is deadly. I think I died once in my first play though of fallout 3 (and that was in point lookout addon), In New Vegas I died a number of times already as there are some tough fights. Feels much more Fallout 1 or 2 to me in that regard.
-A lot of setting from Fallout 1 and 2 carried over in a logical manner.
-It is fun game to play
Cons
-Encountered a few minor bugs, but nothing game breaking yet. Also some quests it is unclear what you need to do to solve it.
Spoiler: That you have to buy the key to get the rocket models for the “Ghouls in space” quest.
- The map seems crowded. I understand that the developers needed something to interrupt walks, be it a gas station or a shack, but it seems that the major locations are too close to one another.
- Not sure if there is any respawning, I took out a slaving camp of the Legion, and they have not sent in any reinforcements or new men (so I can kill them and take there stuff of course).
So far, I am enjoying it, seems to be a lot more like Fallout 1 and 2 then 3 ever was. Fallout 3 was fun, but new Vegas seems to be not only fun, but getting back in the saddle. Of course, one of the strong points of the first two fallouts was replayablity, and I do not know if that exists in New Vegas. Also, it has avoiding the sometimes outright sillyness that 2 has in places.
