First time playing fallout 1- few questions.

First time out of the vault
I'm just starting fallout 1 and being an obsessive "explorer" i'd like to do as many of the quests as i could. Since the main waterchip quest has a timer should i just get over with it as soon as possible? Or do i have enough time to explore other cities and quests? Any other time oriented quests i should do in a hurry? I also heard that Necropolis is appearantly overrun after 88 days..so should i hurry up with those quests or is there any way to stop this disaster? And lastly..any other tips? Mistakes a first timer like me could make that would totally screw up the game(like wrong stats)?

Thanks in advance.

It's probably a good idea. Mind you, unless you already know where to find a chip you'll have to do some exploring anyway. I don't think most people have a problem with the time limit, and if somehow you do fail, another game might not be the worst thing.

Depends on what you mean by totally screwing up the game, but probably not. Don't randomly shoot people in the face.

I meant it more in the sense of choosing the wrong skills or putting way too much points into useless skills.

The game is designed so that you can basically finish it with a pure diplomat, a pure thief, or a pure soldier, so unless you go out of your way to make a weirdly hyper-specialized character, you should be all right. If you're not afraid of spoilers at all, you can look up the appropriate part of my Fo1 walkthrough, otherwise I'll say that the non-combat skills that are most worthy of attention are

[spoiler:2cfb704ce6]Lockpick and Speech[/spoiler:2cfb704ce6]
and that you can pretty much do without

[spoiler:2cfb704ce6]Throwing[/spoiler:2cfb704ce6]
[spoiler:2cfb704ce6]Traps[/spoiler:2cfb704ce6]
[spoiler:2cfb704ce6]Barter[/spoiler:2cfb704ce6]
and

[spoiler:2cfb704ce6]Gambling[/spoiler:2cfb704ce6]

to name a few. You don't really need much, although some skills may open up minor options.

Regarding the time limit: If you explore every location you meet / talk to every npc there and think a bit about what they say, the time limit is absolutly no problem. Fallout 1 has a straight logic path through the game, unless Fallout 2, which is so free, where you wander around without "real target" in front of you for a long time.

If i find the waterchip within the 150 days and complete that quest...is the time limit then removed and you're left with freedom to do all the side-quests? Or is there another time limit added(i mentioned necropolis which i heard gets destroyed after awhile)?

As far as I know, once you complete the Water Chip quest, you get as much time as you want to finish the game, with no major events triggered by time.

On Necropolis:
[spoiler:34cad30dfe] Necropolis does get destroyed, as do other towns, but if I remember correctly, this happens only in the restoration mod (not in the original game). It was an intended feature, but it never made it to the final release. (I could be wrong about this! It's been a few years since I played F1.) [/spoiler:34cad30dfe]
Honestly, just go for it. In my first play-through, I never brought the chip on time (partly to see what would happen) and it never bothered me to start again. If anything, you get to do all the things you missed / messed up the first time around.

Click below to extend time limit on the Water Chip quest:
[spoiler:34cad30dfe]In the Hub, go to the South section and have a chat with the Water Merchants. You should be able to get enough money together to buy some water supplies for your Vault. You'll get another 100 days or so, with no other effect on your game.[/spoiler:34cad30dfe]

Safe often. Don't read books at The Glow. In fact, don't do anything at The Glow, just prepare yourself properly, get what you're there for and get the fuck out of there. That is all.

I think that's not true. I could be wrong, but;

[spoiler:dac743e908]After retrieving the waterchip you have another time limit to kill the master and destroy the vats. I'm not sure if this was extended in one of the patchs, but if you buy water from the merchant's it shaves time off the time you have to kill the mutants[/spoiler:dac743e908]

The second time limit was removed by the patch. There's only the 13-year limit.
