First time playing Heroes of Might and Magic, any advice?

Look, Ma! Two Heads!
Thanks to the Steam summer sale, I picked up HOMM 5 + the two expansions for a solid $5. I've heard HOMM V is kind of easy, so I'm wondering if I should go straight to one of the expansions for a more challenging experience or if someone could recommend difficulty mods. Maybe there is a faction that is more difficult / rewarding to play in the main campaign that I could try?

I don't want to spoil the game by going to gamefaqs or the such, so I'm hoping a HOMM 5 fan could help me out here.

Well its your first time playing the game isn't it? Play the original to get used to it, and then decide whether you want to keep playing the campaign or move onto the expansions.

Play the original first. Expansions bring slight changes to balance between races, units etc. though vanilla is okay on its own, and in some points way better.
Story-wise, the whole game is pretty weak if you ask me, or at least it didn't keep my attention up, but generally, it is a fun game.

Though if you want a real Heroes of Might and Magic game, play the original ones. I especially recommend the third game, which is my absolute favorite.

I said it already on this forum a couple of times and will say it again. When it comes to HoMM games, nothing beats HoMM 3 with unofficial Wake of the Gods expansion. I played all the games in the franchise and the third is still numero uno despite its age.

^ That's because III absolutely nailed it, and there's yet to be a game to come close to it. Like you said, though, HOMMV is still a good game in its own right, even if I only ever play the "3x3 battle" mode these days.

@OP: As far as I remember, HOMM is a fairly easy game to get into. Especially so for V. If you just start the original campaign, it'll slowly ease you into all the concepts etc. Once you get a little more into it, look up the "ability wheel", to see what special ability you can get for each race.

As for expansions, dwarves were quite good and welcome; orcs were fine as a race, but the alternate unit versions were quite useless for the most part imol
