First Time Playthrough Advice...

First time out of the vault
Well somehow how missed the whole Fallout experience, and after trawling some popular gaming boards where the series is so highly regarded, I am about to take the plunge and give it a run.

With so many mods and patches available, the only initial advice I am after is what would be generally recommended for a first time play-though? Vanilla (with Killap 1.02.25 and Hi-Res) or with RP as well?

Killap's restoration project is highly recommended for Fallout 2. It makes the game what it should've been in the first place.
 
Heh, I'm not here for a long time but that's like the n-th person asking this question. What patch do we recommend. To people who know the patches inside n' out (like creators, for example): maybe it would be good to make a sticky relating what noteworthy patches are currently available, and giving a brief description of them? Just a thought.
